I honestly don't know what the last straw was, but the person who put Gambino into solitary did not indicate any interest in taking him out.
Rather than leave Gambino beating his head against the wall, I followed his last request and turned it into a ban.
While we're on the subject, and since Coventry has become an open secret, we need to get a few things straight.
What is Coventry? It is a way to put someone on everyone's ignore list. (No, he doesn't actually show up there and no, you can't override it.)
There are a couple of reasons for using it, one of which is because a member ASKED us to do it. I'd joke about the witness protection program but that might give the wrong impression. Calling attention to someone who is in that situation needs to be discouraged. Since I can't sit here all night deleting reposts of "What happened to so-and-so?" it might take the form of popping the person who's doing it into Coventry himself... or maybe banning him overnight.
(You're going to say I should PM you in that case, aren't you? Well, excuse me, but fuck that noise. For all I know you're the very person the guy's trying to get away from! So, no, I'm going to turn your lights and water off and sort you out in the morning.)
Which brings us to stuffing someone into Coventry against their will. It's easier to just ban them, but there are cases where Coventry seems more appropriate; it's less confrontational, for one thing. Person posts as usual, doesn't get any answers, gets frustrated, gets bored, goes and sleeps off whatever has been eating him. It's really a kinder, gentler approach, when you let it work as intended.
Involuntary Coventry can also be last-ditch attempt to cool someone off so we won't have to ban him.
Unfortunately we have guys who think it's funny to spot the "ghost" and clue him in, and then egg him on to bump the furniture or otherwise try to make his presence felt. Makes you feel really clever to have figured it out, right? But the "ghost" is supposed to be learning that the place will go on just fine without him, and cluing him in that you can't see his posts fucks up the whole thing.
I happen to have a soft spot for Gambino myself. The people who were rooting for him to keep posting even though they knew that he was in Coventry might want to stay out of my way for a little while.
