So, what is everybody doing for Ramadan?

Well, I'm not doing anything.

But I do have a question - what do people do who live at high latitudes (i.e. a long way north or a long way south) when Ramadan (which doesn't happen at a fixed time in the western calendar year) falls in the middle of the summer - they can't eat between sunrise and sunset, which might be only a few hours or, if they're far enough away from the equator, the sun might not set at all in midsummer.

Once, of course, there would have been no Muslims at these high latitudes, but now there must be Muslims in places like Alaska, Iceland, northern Scandinavia and so on.

(Equally, of course, fasting between sunrise and sunset at these latitudes when Ramadan falls in mid-winter wouldn't be much of a hardship.)

I've often wondered about this, but whenever I've asked anyone they've assumed I'm being flippant, although I'm not.

It goes moon to moon.
One measures time by the changing moons.

That reminds me of the eternal question of what time zone Gizmo has to be in when he turns into a Gremlin after eating past midnight.

In the spirit of Ramadan, Im suggesting Eastern time.

I'm going to eat a lot during the day to make up for all that fasting.

Just like how I make sure to eat twice as much meat as a normal person to thwart my vegan roommate's pitiful attempt to save animal lives.

locked.

Ramadan to me is about as pussy a thing to do as it comes. Second only to lent for catholics.

I myself use to be mulsim but no more......but ever since I began BB'ing I fasted last year (Out of respect for my family, have fasted all my life prior to leaving Islam) and man it was tough.....I was contantly hungry (felt like my stomach was cannibalizing itself!) and my stomach growls were so loud it sounded like I was passing gas! I've realized that I just can't fast anymore, especially since I'm on cycle....got to eat every 2-3 hours, thats how hungry I get. Plus I don't want to end up in a catabolic state and risk all this HARD EARNED MUSCLE! Eating before sunrise will just result in extra fat storage (assuming you consume carbs) due to the binging before sunrise and right after as most muslims just go back to sleep. Don't mean to offend anyone, but it doesn't make much sense to workout during Ramadan as lifting under such dietary restrictions will only result in extreme catabolism.

How is it a pussy thing to do? Fasting all day long without even a drop of water requires the such a strong will that many do not posses....when I was younger so many couldn't believe that I could fast so strictly at such a young age, many wouldnt last a few hours without water...

Bombing buildings and killing christians.

Same thing as everyone else.

When I was stationed in Turkey, Ramadan meant being awakened by a guy beating a big ass drum as he was walking through the neighborhoods. This would happen at 3:30-4:30 in the morning.

Since we weren't allowed to have weapons (I so wanted to terrorize him with a BB gun), I thought about wailing on him with water balloons dropped from my 4th floor balcony, but I didn't feel like having the Turkish police paying me a visit.

I am going to realize that all the worlds religions and people are more a like than not alike

anmd then I am goign to realize that its a few bad seeds that fuck it all up for the rest of us.....

Many Muslim converts give it up at this time of year...

No wonder.. Tough stuff if you observe..

No doubt. One of the Turks we worked with tried to observe Ramadan by fasting. He got about halfway through the month, then got sick because of the fasting.

We Westerners told him we didn't think his Allah wanted him to die just because he wanted to proved his religious fervor. :D

I'm going to watch my training partner try to train in the evening after he drinks a shake at sundown! And I am going to eat... all day.

Where I am they just seem to drive around in 4 seater shitty cars with 8 of em in and set off fireworks around this time of year, oh yea and they whinge some more as well.

I did have to chuckle when I heard the locals were getting pissed when here they are starving themselves and the US soldiers were chunking down right in front of them.

Now, Soldiers are not allowed to eat in public..

Oh please I've had days where I've been working on projects and forgotten to eat or drink anything for a day easy. I've gone 4 days once without water and 7 without food. Just a spiritual cleansing kind of thing.

Plus they do it when the days are shorter... HA! Pussies.

Don't get me started on giving up hoagies for lent or some stupid shit like that.

Woot woot.

I am not surprised.

Since Turkey is rather secular, Ramadan wasn't followed as closely compared to other Muslim countries. Hell, some Turks would run around, eating and drinking all day.

You should have seen the partying going on after Ramadan was over with. A bottomless Raki glass.

Shit, I thought this thread was about Ramen noodles.

I was hoping for a new recipe.

Regarding Ramadan. I fasted the entire first day.

Meaning~I ate as fast as possible.d

Yes, the dates of the festival are determined by the moon, but the hours of fasting are determined by the sun.

Oh - believe me I would know.

I was just referring to the dates - not the time of day.

Happy Ramadan to those celebrating. Sorry some folks here are so irrational. Odds are if your a Muslim reading this bulliten board and into BB, you're the kind that are needed to shame the more militant types into proper behavior.

IE - a white person throws around the N word it's other whites jumping down his throat that gets him to stop, not black people getting pissed.
