So I bashed my head last night...

jack sparrow

Think like Jack
Platinum
Fell off a ladder painting a ceiling, knocked myself out cold, came too in a puddle of blood blah blah blah....

Cleaend up and drove to Emergency where they held me captive until like 6:30a and constantly shined lights in my eyes. Whatever...I hurt myself all the time. Big deal. I'm worse than Tim the Toolman.

Something is werid though...my left pinky and ring finger have been numb all day, as well as the inner heal of my hand and the top side...not pins and needles...more like NO feeling at all. Unrecongnized pain in my neck and traps too.

Should I wait for this to go away or see some kind of specialist....my hand wasn't numb last night...at least not that I can remember. Alls I know is my head is still pounding and I'm having ALOT of trouble with the SHIFT and CAPS LOCK keys.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The parasthesias you describe can fit the description of an ulnar nerve palsy (you might have injured it during the fall), but it can also fit the description of a C8 lesion (i.e., a cervical/neck fracture). Does the numbness (parasthesias) also involved the medial aspect of your forearm and bicep?

IF YOUR NECK IS HURTING AND YOU ARE EXPERIENCING PARASTHESIAS (NUMBNESS) IN YOUR HANDS/FINGERS, THEN GO TO THE ED AND HAVE A CT OR X-RAYS OF YOUR NECK TO RULE OUT A FRACTURE!! I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH!

Did they know this when you were discharged? Personally, given your loss of consciousness, I would have probably CT'd your head anyway. It's better than keeping you around for 12 hours, gives you reassurance that you don't have a head injury, and generally allows the detection of a head injury earlier than if you wait until you start herniating. By the time your pupil is sluggish, you're already pretty far progressed.

agreed...it does sound to me like he hit or pinched a nerve is his fall...I remember i pinched a nerve and my whole wrist and hand was messed up for about 1 week. After falling they should have done a scan on him automatically. And from the sounds of his head ache and such after the fall he should not sleep nor drive alone.....Am i right?

Thanks for the advice and well wishes. Tomorrow I will call my Doc and see what he says about it. He will most likely tell me to have it looked into immediately. Scary part is, last night my head was in such pain, I didn't even notice my hand was numb, or I would have told them at the hospital. I noticed it when I was feeling around for the automatic window roll down button....I was like WTF? where the hell are my fingers?

I thought it would be ok with some sleep, but I guess not :(

yikes!!
you jerk. you should have told me this.
you're probably fine- don't be alarmed. Anytime after a big fall or accident, you're likely to experience odd pains and aches 24-48 hours after it happened. BUT you should still go get a CT scan if you still have it in another day. its most likely just bruising and swelling, but get a LOT of rest and make sure you know a doc ahead of time to call in case you start feeling really sick.

As an ED physician that sees a lot of head injuries and neck fractures (I work in a trauma center), I can tell you this:

Parasthesias in a cervical dermatome distribution + neck pain = fracture until proven otherwise.

Hand is still has no feeling in half of it...my boss demanded that I go into another ER and tell them what happened.

The ER that I went to, well let me give you a little quick history on them. I broke my hand once and was sitting on the table with a bag of ice on it (my right hand). The nurse comes in and starts putting a splint on my left hand, told me that I had broken a few metacarpals and that I would need surgery. I was like "But I broke my right hand."

Nurse: "Sir...it says here that you broke your left hand".

I pulled my purple hand out from underneath the bag of ice and said "Which one looks broken to YOU Einstein?"

The idiots looked at the x-rays backwards

Good news though...I woke up 3 days in a row now :)

Ouch, don't do it again. :)

Its more a question of when, not if. I dont even start a project at home without a box of band-aids and some alcohol handy.

I'm off to work and then to the ER...see you folks in a bit.

LOL@ the Google ads "finger numbness", "hand numbness at night", "Numbness in Thumb", "Nerve damage".

Sorry Jack, don't mean to make a joke out of your situation. This was just a bump to see what you found out.

Ok..this morning I went to the ER. Little did I know, that the Doc I that was treating me was ranked in the top 10 in the state of Kentucky...and the dude is under 30 yrs old!

Anyway, I had the CT scan, MRI, head x-rays, back x-rays the whole 9 yards. Even checked every single area of my hand for feeling with a broken toothpick type thing for sensation.

Turns out I have a cuncussion, and two herniated discs between my 4th, 5th and 6th vertebraes....that's why I can't feel my left hand. LOL of all things, he put me on steroids and gave me 4 days off work.

I should change my user title to dip_schitt.

Saweett! 4 days off work. That's what I need. Show me your techniques and I fall like the best of them. Will the herniated disks heal on their own? or is that what the steroids do? I hope everything comes out okay.

Apparently they are only mildly herniated...meaning they are sticking out from in between the discs and poking into my spinal cord. The Steroids are supposed to have it cleared up in a week tops, but if not, I gotta follow up with a Neurosurgeon.

Dude, alls you gotta do is think that you can skip a rung while stepping off a ladder, and make sure there is a doorframe nearby. Hit it approximately as hard as if you were running into it, and viola. You get 4 days off, a numb hand, and a perpetual headache.

I would just ask for the days off.

Oh you man!

Okay, they check for pinprick sensation with the toothpick (standard checks, temperature, vibration, pinprick, proprioceptive).

Steroids are to reduce the inflammation (Solu-Medrol? Prednisone?) Avoid sweets and salt, they have a tendency to make you hold water like a MoFo.

The spine is one giant Rube Goldberg device, what happens in one location affects everything above or below.

You may need PT ... and remember the stuff I told you in the other email ... Let the swelling go down, rest and then get stuff straightened back out ...

Jeez jack :worried:

Bingo....thats what the script said, but it says MethylPREDNISolone on the box.

Glad you're ok. A CT should have been done on your initial visit. Although I don't think you necessarily have a malpractice case, you should, however, write a letter to the original ED and let the ED physician know.
