So, did I mention that I'm considering taking up the sport of Tae Kwon Do?

If you have a knee injury I really wouldnt recommend it since most of TKD takes place in the air/kicks and it really strains your knees and legs, I did tkd for many years, am actually a black belt but havent practiced in a long time, it's very good for concentration, discipline and flexibility, not so much for self defense... I liked a lot...

TKD is very impractical for fighting because it relies mostly on kicking. Kicking is also very dangerous, as there is too much power in many kicks to block. I've broken both my hands trying to stop kicks. Most martial arts are incredibly boring, as you spend most of your time kicking and punching into air. If you are serious about it, I'd take Shotokan Karat because it is slightly more practical than TKD because it involves more punching than kicking.

i dont actually want to fight anyone. i just want a physical activity

Do it. It's good kicking art, good cardio, you'll improve balance, and it's fun. Don't listen to Pick3 and it's not the most effective, it's not like you are some fighter anyway. Do what makes you happy and you can take your kids with you.

exactly thanks!

You don't have to do MMA either. MMA isn't the most effective either. I'd say, trained world military combat fighters are the best fighters in the world. They'd kill you. LOL!!! You just want to train in something and have fun doing it, Smurfy.

TKD is fine if you're just doing it to get active...

but if you actually want to have an effective martial art for self defense, you'd be much better served studying Muay Thai.
