A member of one of the field crews I oversee was bitten by a cotton mouth and the hospital bill was $22k.

The anti-venom was $19k.

That's insane. Is that amount comparable to the antivenom price for other snakes?

I don't know ... cottonmouths are very common in the Southeast. I really don't understand why it's so expensive.

Phenom, actually it happened a few months ago, the bills finally settled ... he's fine and is insured.

The cottonmouth lies patiently, awaiting its prey in the weeds.

Epitomizes all that is wrong with our current health care system. No way in hell a few drops of venom mixed in with its counterpart constituents costs even a hundred dollars for them to make.Very sad.

It's a very rare occurance. I've spoken with safety managers who had 30 crews working in the swamps in Louisiana for decades without a snake bite.

When I worked in the field I literally stepped on snakes (unintentionally) and never got bitten.

I was curious so I just did some reading. Apparently much of the cost is due to the fact that it must be administered in a hospital by IV. at a cost of $500-$1k per ampule, and a minimum of around 20 ampules.

the BP med i take is from snake vemon. and Water Mocasins will fuck your day all up. nice bit of hemotoxin. had a buddy get bit by one. rushed to the hospital. given anti-venom. finds out he is allergic to anti-venom. drinks some OJ and says "i'm gonna take a nap, i might see you later".

That's insane. Why would using an IV cost so much?

Shit when I go give plasma, they pay me :)

LOL

Hospitals charge $50 for two aspirin. Someone read their fathers bill once and if I recall correctly they charged $500 to medicare just to wheel him out to the front entrance when he was discharged.
