does anybody know how much weight the smith machine actually takes off? just curious because the only thing i usually use it for is shoulder press when i wanna do bar because with my fucked up rotator i cant reach back behind my head and pick the bar up off of the rack without almost popping it out on a free weight shoulder press. i know it takes weight off but never new how much. like 30 lbs maybe?

its not realy wieght lbs that it takes off.its that you dont have to stablize the bar.so its just esser and not as efectiv for billding mass.

IF the machine uses counterbalances, then often it just means that the bar weighs nothing, and you are just lifting the weight of the plates. The non-counter balanced machines have bars that weigh anything from 20-45lbs. The FRICTION incurred by the bar being on the tracks can vary from practically nothing to quite substancial if the machine needs cleaning.

yeah i can definitely tell that im probably not using secondary muscles as much either. i might just stick to dumbells.

Usually it has a little sticker that says starting weight...for example mine says 15lbs. Then of course there is the stabilizer muscles that have been mentioned before. Just use the damn machine to stretch or hang your towel then head to the dumbell rack for shoulder presses!

Every machine is different.

The free weight bar should be either 44 or 45 lbs...depending.

Take the bar off the rack, sit back on a bench (or better yet stand) and press away. Your shoulder will heal better like that anyway.
