disgusting.
the judge who would hand down such a sentence, even to "make an example" (why the fuck should you be harder on one person to make an example? doesnt the concept of equality make this a pointless gesture? i think that the very premise of "making an example" merely serves to highlight that equality under the eyes of the law is a polite fiction) is committing a moral crime far worse than anything this kid has done.
besides, "making an example" JUST DOESNT WORK because kids are kids, and criminals never think theyll get caught anyway. every time i commit a crime i dont think "hmmmmmm golden, you gotta be careful this could get you 3-4 years", i just think of pulling the damn caper off! me? caught? whatchatalkingaboutwillis?
so at the end of the day this kid will have his life fairly well destroyed for nothing.
i think some physical persuasion is in order. every animal high and low understands violence.

Everyone breaks laws; be the law a simple speed limit or complex tax laws.
The real point here is the fact that he knew the risk, took the risk and lost.
It's not like there is a common misconception that US laws go easy on people for possesion. We've all heard horror stories of kids getting busted for possession on their 3rd strike and goin in for life.
Plain and simple, kid does something completely moronic and got caught...kid goes to jail. **shrug** Life goes on.
Everyone breaks laws; be the law a simple speed limit or complex tax laws.
The real point here is the fact that he knew the risk, took the risk and lost.

The one thing everyone has in common, even serial killers have a mom and a dad.
If it were my child, I'd tell her the same thing. If you're dumb enough to do something like that, you're dumb enough to serve the time. Granted, I'd hire a lawyer to help her out and support her emotionally and financially.
But I sure as hell wouldn't blame the laws on her actions.
And I certainly wouldn't compare her to Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks.
