Sled Dragging?

Jim Ouini

New member
Anyone do this?

I've heard it's good for GPP, and I assume you can get some good leg workouts by running forwards and backwards.

I don't have access to one, it just looks like fun and something I'd like to try sometime.

My wife had me dragging half a matress support grid-thing around her sand-school so it'd be nice and smooth for her horses. It's very hard work on the thighs and calves and after 20 minutes or so I'd be gasping and groaning while listening to her telling me I'd "missed a bit, over there".

I think either wnt2bbeast or KillahBee had a thread on sled-dragging in the Power Forum or the Strongman forum. IronMind sell harnesses if you start to get serious or think of pulling vehicles.

Thanks Madcow. K to you is almost useless; to steal from Guinness' analogy it's like telling Michael Jordan 'nice shot'.

Anyway, that was actually a fun read, those tales of yore. Nice tips 'n tricks and real motivational, especially the way he ends it:

the one who lifts the most has trained the most. After reading this article, you can get a picture what he meant. There is no secrets at all, just pure hard work. It's the cold hard truth.

Thanks! I'll check it out over there.

Holy shit I just went over there and it sounds HARD.

I mean these guys are talking about getting run over by cars and pulling wagons full of hay. Damn.

Some stuff I googled (from Dave Tate). Actually I my original question was how it might transfer to squat/dead and MC2's Finnish link and this info kind of answers it.

Sample Sled Dragging Movements
Around the waist forward dragging: This could be classified as the king of all dragging exercises. Run a nylon strap through the sled with the other end attached to a weight belt. Keep the belt one notch loose to allow for you to pull in and expand your belly as much as possible. This will allow you to better push your abdominals against the belt in the same fashion we advise for the power lifts.

As you walk forward do so in an explosive, dynamic motion, driving into the belt as you step. You should hear the forces snap the sled with each step. This is much different than just walking forward. This type of dragging is great for the development of the hamstrings and glutes.
Ankle dragging: This movement is great for the hip flexors and hamstrings. To perform it you'll need to attach one nylon strap to the sled and pass a second through the first for a "T" shape. Tie or loop the end of the second strap around each ankle.
Start the motion in a split stance position and pull the back leg forward with a slight bend in the knee. Concentrate on using the hip flexors and abdominals, not the quads. This movement has had a profound difference on many lifters I've consulted. It teaches them how to use their abdominals in a way that's conducive to doing the squat.
Rope dragging behind the knees: This style of dragging will pulverize your hamstrings. Attach the strap to the sled. Run a rope or another nylon strap through the first. Face away from the sled and grip the second strap behind your knees with a close stance. Stay in this semi-squatted position and walk forward.

I've seen pics of Scotsman and I think it's the cars that'll be dodging.

The thing with the strongman training is that you're picking up odd things in odd ways and usually against the clock. Not only do you have to be monster strong but also be fit and have no real weak points. As Svend Karlsen said, "If you can't deadlift, you can't be a strongman". He's the one who also said, "You don't have to be fat to be strong".

I drag sled all of the time, love it.

Great for active recovery, warm ups or simply kicking your ass. I somtimes do them to supplement in a workout or for a complete workout.

It will definately get you in shape, I carry it in my car all of the time, don't it in my backyard, good stuff!!!

Its meant to be hard!!!!!!!!!

You'll have the last laugh when the totals that were your maximum get beaten by your better scores. BF is here beside me on the PC shouting "Tell him to pull the fucking sled. He'll be as strong as fuck"!!!!

LOL, thanks.

Yeah pulling sleds/cars/tractors, is lots of fun but also very hard work. Great for core strength and for building drive power in the legs. It's great for building up fitness as well since it is a great cardio workout. I really need to start doing more of it.

Those Sven quotes are great, funny thing is when he won the WSM he was the biggest/fattest he'd ever been (meaning he still had some abs just not super lean).

Cheers,

Do you do that at a specially arranged training session or do you just go out into the local park and pull it?

The tractor was in a competition. For cars my brother and I do that in front of my parents house. We get some funny looks from the neighbors.LOL

I bought a sled a few months ago - unfortunately it arrived around the same time I f-ed my back up. Haven't been able to push myself on it, but it's fun as hell and really tests you physically AND mentally.

Well I just ordered one. You guys got me all excited. I have no idea how or when I'm going to use it yet. ;)

I mean I can't exactly use it on off days between, say, squat or dead sessions can I? or on the weekends?

I guess it'll be for use between heavy training cycles, like active recovery.

Also, where's the best place to do this sledding? on the grass, a track, ??

I'm gonna try and get my brother to do it with me. My wife shook her head when I told her I ordered one since she's 'never even seen you run, period'

nice job! where'd you get it from? I usually did it on weekends, mostly for timing reasons. I like to have a couple hours to just get at it. I take mine to a local highschool with a huge grass/dirt field nice and early before the MILFs show up and wonder what the hell I am doing.

I got it from EliteFTS.com. Cheapie clearance model for 135$.

Yeah I think I'll take it to the local HS track and test it out. I better get there early too, heh. :)

I got my sled a couple days ago. It wasn't even boxed just had postage on it and the mailman plopped it on our porch. I'm sure he was wondering what the hell it was.

Anyway, I tried it out this morning - it's a lot of fun, I love it. This may be my answer to GPP since I hate cardio. I don't know how it compares to say a treadmill or stair stepper but it's a lot more enjoyable that's for sure.

I actually used my dip belt and looped it through the nylon strap - then I put on only a 25lb plate and tried to walk with purposeful strides. I read you have to step into the belt so that's what I tried to do. It was pretty easy so I had my wife sit on it :p She weighs about 125 so that was more of a challenge. Plus the dog was chasing me so that made for an interesting workout environment ;)

I could definitely feel my hams and glutes driving and I love the concentric only since I hammered them yesterday in the gym. I'm going to keep it in my car with a couple 45's and see if I can do a 3-4 times per week program.

Today did 3 trips back and forth (~200ft) with two 45's on the sled. The place I do it has a very slight incline, so on the way up it's pretty hard and on the way down...it's pretty hard too.

Then I did 2 trips back and forth going backwards. First time I tried this - really worked my hip flexors and calves.

I was sucking wind by then and decided that was enough for today. Fun stuff.

lol, that's how mine came, except it was at work! sat in the kitchen for days.

I think if I started doing it backwards my wife would just think I was showing off.

We did the sand-school again yesterday and after I'd been up and down for about twenty passes my wife said that it doesn't look hard and she wanted to take a turn. She got about half-way down before she was really leaning into it and almost reached the end before stopping. Since I couldn't possibly be that much stronger she's decided that it's easier for tall people. To her credit she made it all the way back too.
