Sled Dragging

I've been using this for AR and GPP for a long time now, and have really benefitted from it, but I was wondering what YOU do when you sled drag. Sprints? Distance? How often?

DBC, I'd like to hear from you on this one, if you would be so kind. :)

Hey spatts,

I have a question regarding that. I really don't see why you guys would bother sled dragging, do you believe it adds to your daily training? I would think it is just an inefficent way to train as it doesn't stress any specific muscle group. I might be missing something here but why not just stick to the exercises in the gym?

Again, if you are doing it for fun then more power to you or if you're gonna compete in sled dragging. :) I am just really curious why bother with it?

Thanks. :)

Edited to add: Is this something powerlifters do? I am not too familiar with strength training ...

sk* ...nevermind. Not gonna ruin a good thread. I'm not sure how you can call it non-productive/pointless in one breath, and then ask about how it works in another. If you don't know anything about it, you may want to ask THEN judge.

NOOOOOO, I never bad mouthed it, I just said I don't understand it and wanted an explanation. I have the right to ask a question right?

Oh, I'm sorry, I took "why would you bother doing it," "it doesn't stress any particular muscle," "ineffiecient way to train," and "why bother with it," to carry a negative connotation.

Listen, I just have never seen anyone doing it so it looked odd to me, I really didn't mean it in a bad way. I doubt you wanna turn this thread to an argument as I don't either. I even tried to stick the smileys in there so it didn't look like I ment it in a bad way, I just really don't see the point of it specially from the bodybuilding perspective. Also, since this thread is on the training board and not the powerlifting board I assumed it was a "body building" exercise and not powerlifting. I really don't see why you are getting all worked up for, I probably would have shut up if this thread was on the powerlifting board. Like I said, I just wanted to know the reason for it ... I didn't mean it in a negative way and if you took it like that I am sorry.

Well I don't always do them even tho it would most likely help, but when I do them I alternate speed-sometimes walk real fast or slow same with weight some times heavy sometimes light, andthe way I walk too, walk stiff legged digging in your heals, or narrow stance leaning forward, or walk real wide like with your feet far apart. I think it is best used as a gpp tool and can be used a couple times a week like for extra small workouts.

That's all I really wanted to know lol, but if you don't mind me asking ... does sled dragging have any advantage over squats or the leg press? Or is it just something else to add to your exercise schedule?

Thanks. :)

Sk*, I'm not worked up. There are powerlifters, bodybuilders, fitness, figure, oly's, etc, on this board. Maybe if you learned about sled dragging, as well as other "body builders" you could benefit from it to.

To answer your question objectively, sled dragging can be use ful for improving GPP, injury rehabilitation, strength training, prehabilitation, increased work capacity, hypertrophy, starting strength, acceleration strength, strength endurance, active recovery, etc...

Here's what we do:

Thanks, i'll look in the link now.

This is what we do on our three off days from training. Now that we have a wheel barrow, things are gonna get extra fun. :D

No really just calm down Spatts---lol that was me being sarcastic hahah sometimes it's best to let the meow mix take over uh ? lol

Do you mostly drag on asphalt? Do you have to wear earplugs when you do that, seems like it'd be outrageously loud.

It's not too loud. Just loud enough to keep the neighbors from coming out to watch. I like to find as rough a surface as possible. I also like to just drive to an out of the way hill, and ankle drag backwards up the hill.

Well...I am gonna start dragging the sled this Summer (yes, you heard me). I don't like it and have had negative affects from the past...but will try it again this Summer.

It does get your muscles in shape for sure...and helps with soreness and bringing up a few small parts that are hard to work in the gym.

I would always do one trip down that was very slow and deliberate. Take each step one movement at a time. Step, stop, move the other foot, stop, repeat. I would then go back in a constant super long stride/continous motion. I will also make some steps longer than others and some narrower/wider than others. Sled dragging sucks...so why not use as much variation as possible to make it more fun?

any recommendations on sled purchase?

is a flat bottom sled better or more durable than a railed edge one? ive seen both and wondered.

i like the one on elitefitness, there is also a "sprinters" sled on performbetter.com. elite's is flat, performbetter.com's is railed.

i like bfolds setup with the vhandle and chain. im not sure how to set up an ankle setup. do any of you guys have a torso harness?

sorry so many questions...

i looked at sled dragging 101 on the asylum's site...but the vids wouldnt load for me. :bawling:

I have a set up and for the most part it just gets "engineered" into whatever I need that day.

I would suggest if you are sprinting on grass to just get a car tire and load a little weight on it. Dragging a flat sled in grass is much harder so if you are going to run with it, get one with rails.

Torso harness's can be bought or I just use a rope through my weight belt

attachments can all be made from nylon rope and those clips you see on the universal machines....lol having a brainfart

if you can find a scrap metal shop there is a way to make a decent sled without any welds for just the price of the scrap and a couple bends

I'd like some ideas on where to find a harness (<--correct term?) to pull a sled? I imagine I could have the sled itself made by someone. Any tips for buying or making would be appreciated.

http://t-mag.com/html/body_146gpp.html

Here, read that and it should answer your questions sk.

I just built a sled the other day. I got a 2'x4' sheet of ten gauge steel and welded a post to it. Then I cut two holes in the front and used to nylon strapping I got at Ace hardware for .33 cents a foot. Total cost was about $25 for material.

harness

I have also seen ads in monster muscle and a couple other mags for actual harnesses.

For pulling a sled a full harness is not needed at all b/c you will typically only pull between 100 and 600 pounds all of which can be done with a weight belt

if you do not have access to a welder, oversize the dimensions an extra inch and a half then you can bend three sides up to make a box for the first 2 plates to sit in, then you can just put a piece of tubing in those plates and load more on top...

Bignate, we are in the process of launching our full site. The vids should be up by tonight...sorry.

Should be working now. I've been noticing some performance issues from our hosting company today, with extremely slow transfer rates.

I just checked it, and I'm seeing good speed, but if you see a slowdown, do a right-click and Save Target As.

:)

hmmm...so scrap metal bent, weld a post and maybe a ring on the front? or is the 2 holes on the sides of the front ok too. will they hold? i wanted to just attach a chain to the little loop in the front. the weld will hold it?

i just got mine today and i love it, its prolly 2'x2' w/6 front lip and maybe 20" plate loader and painted bright yellow and black to match my yoke:D

tomorow i'm gonna try it out by hookin to my belt and running up the levee with it and bringing farmers down, then maybe run w/it and farmers in ea hand. cant wait to try it. it's only 105lbs dry.

I just got back from my first run with mine today. It feels good. I did upper body tonight and I can see how this will help get my sorry ass in shape. :) Mines roughly 45lbs dry. I'm looking forward to lower body day.
