Shoulderpressing in Westsidetraining?

Hi.

I don´t see overhead shoulderpressing in Westsidetraining.

Often i just see just shoulder raises, but no presses. Is there a reason behind this? I searched a lot, but can´t find an answer myself. Or is it just too taxing, or just in no need for the 3 lifts? I mean, i would like to insert some shoulderpresses, would that be a problem?

I wanna develop this exercises:

Squat, Deadlift
Row, Bench, Chins, Shoulderpress

Possible with Westside (just for getting sure, that this would be westside. If not, i would call it myside)?

I prefer to do an Overhead press instead of upper body speed day. I can do push presses with some light repetition work for pressing on that day and still feel like I get enough work done. speed work is tough on my joints for my upper body.

There's no reason not to do them. As shoulders is one of the secondary groups used in the bench press, they need to be developed as well.

Westside training isn't just a group of exercises to be done in a specific way. It asks you to critically assess where your weak points are and work to improve them. This enables you to increase your numbers in the 3 competition lifts- squat, deadlift, and bench. If your a non-competitive lifter like myself, it's also done to increase overall strength and physical fitness. Once you know what your priorities are, it's up to you to figure out how best to put your program together.

All of the exercises you listed, as well the numerous variations of each, are considered useful in this type of training.

there is so much strain on the shoulders from all of the other lifting, that there is very little, if any shoulder work done in the WSB program.

Like Illuminati said, there are tons of oppurtunities for shoulder problems to occur, quite often rotator cuffs, so conventional shoulder presses pretty much are viewed as doing more harm than good.

If you take a good hard look at Westside training, a majority of the movements are geared towards injury prevention. Your shoulders will be taxxed just about everday, in one way or another, during bench movements or jacked under the bar during squat movements.

These guys have gone to great lengths to try to prevent shoulder injuries, ME bench days are all done with grips done inside the rings, board and floor presses to minimize that range of motion or rotation to the shoulders, use of safety squat bars, cambered bars and buffalo bars to help minimize the rotation during squat variations. Yes these movements are used for variation but also a result of years of wear and tear on the joints.

These guys have all beat the hell out of their shoulders, there are tons of variations of shoulder presses to be performed so that you don't get hurt.

Go to elitefts.com, go to Q/A and on the bottom left side is the exercise index that has been updated and continues to be. Always something new to try and experiment with to see what works for you...
