shoulder impingement?

Hey ive been training for about 14 years now, im 6'2" at about 265 at 7%. The last 2-5 years ive had a shoulder pain that just doesnt seem to go away. I had a mri and the doc said the report indicates a impingment in the bicepital plane, but man it feels like something would almost have to be torn, when i put 135 pounds on the bench i feel very unstable at the top of my press, i put 225 on after about 2 sets and it feels more stabe but still hurts, at 315-405 it still hurts but i have totall stability has anyone else had something like this please advise???

I had somewhat of a similar problem, I had a bone spur and a minor case of arthritis and tendonitis. I had a hell of a time working my chest for about 8-10 weeks. Bench was out of the question, The only thing I could do was pretty much cable crossovers (fly's). I was put on some cortisol steroids for 10 days and I heated it up for 15-25 minutes before workout every day and I iced it down for another 15-20 minutes after a workout. I often iced it down beofre bed everynight too. I occasionally have a few pains when I wake up but that's all I have now, it's most likely because I sleep with my hands over my head and it cuts off circulation. Hope this helps a little.

Personally I would avoid corticosteroids at all costs, in the long run it will weaken the tendons/ligiments etc affecting long term stability. I recently had severe tendonitis and had a procedure called prolotherapy done, it wasnt a quick fix, but it was a fix which is what I was looking for. If you want some info on it, there are a few books and general info on the web, you can start here. www.prolotherapy.com

Been in this position for years, there's a couple of threads on AF where I and others have discussed this for some time if you are interested. I'll give you the very brief reader's digest version.

Diagnosis ~2.5 years ago - Acute tendonitus of the bi tendon at the insertion point. Therapy and no resolution.

Last month - MRI, Ortho says impingement and tear (not frayed, a tear) of the Bicep Tendon near where it connects within the shoulder joint and as a result, excessive inflammation. No RC damage.

Earlier this month - Second ortho visit. The bad news, no long-term treatment plan is determined yet. The good news, got hit with a 10cc injection of Marcaine and Lidocaine and ??? via a 21g x 1.5". A lot of needle movement within the shoulder to "spread/target" the solution. The objective, to assist in the diagnostic process and to introduce some short-duration pain management. Emphasized intelligent lifting.

AF post on 9/21 - It's been a week+ and my shoulder feels excellent, no more pain...none! Obviously the injury is still there but damn...I have not had this kind of pain free movement in years. I've completed aggressive chest/delt/tri sessions since the injection (using perfect form) and wow, I'm in heaven. My assessment, go get shot up man...and long-live pharmaceuticals. Now, I need to pursue getting some of these "...caine cocktails" shot into each knee and I'll be set.

Today - Another ortho visit on the calendar for the near future. Long-term - I have no clue yet.

Good luck...this injury is a bitch to deal with over the long-haul.

Later,

Look into some ART at your Chiro... There is a thread by StoneCold... Check into it...

Within 3 months, feel like brand new after 3 years of pain...

Yep! Just had another shoulder impingement cleared up today, actually. My new ART guy is absolutely phenomenal.

Shoulder impingement is very common, and VERY easily solved. I always direct people to the following thread because we covered pretty much everything:

1911-- i would suggest looking into ART. you said yourself: "the injury is still there." listen, i'm all for the masking of pain with pharmeceuticals at certain times (i.e. during the season). but you are really setting yourself up for big problems down the line.
