Shoulder dilema

I have been working out fairly often for about 2 years now and I have always had a left shoulder problem. It never hurts or anything in my everyday life but while I am doing only 1 certain workout it does. If I am to take any weight more then 8 pounds in my left hand and lift it straight out to my side as soon as it hits in line with my shoulders my shoulder will kind of snap and then when I lower it back down it snaps back in and I get a slight pain. After a few reps the pain gets worse, as it does depending on the weight. I just don't want to be hurting anything, I thought it would strengthen but it's not. It never hurts for more then 5 seconds after the workout, just wondering what it might be and what I could do to prevent it?
