Should I switch gyms???

Night Fly

New member
Okay...today I went in for my overhead press/shoulder/tri/chest workout...and I was told by the lady at my desk that the owner said I could no longer use chalk in the gym. I told her that was ridiculous because 1) I only use it for three exercises anyway, and they are all in the same corner of the gym, 2) I am not messy with the stuff, 3) you can't even tell there is chalk on the floor because of the dots in the rubber.

I told her that if he had a problem with it, then he could come to me and talk to me personally....and until then I was going to be using my chalk! Well, during my workout his messenger came in to talk to me (the jackass wasn't even man enough to come talk to me himself). Not only did he interrupt my workout, but I had to wait while he called the owner on the phone.

I finally just wanted to say forget it. I have been a member at that gym for almost three years and he tells me that I can't use my chalk, even when I am not messy with it. I said...either he let me use my chalk or he will lose my membership.

It's been a bad week for me anyway, and this was just the icing on the cake. Do you all blame me for being pissed off??? I HATE froofy gyms anyway.

What would you all do?

use your chalk... screw the gym owner. if he doesnt let you... go live with B fold and use all the chalk your heart desires.

...is there another gym that will allow it -that is what it eventually comes down to

My gym doesn't allow chalk either........

Do like a couple of people there do, sneak it in. One has a little cloth sack that he carries his in. Just be careful with it. :)

..........My Gold's is a froofy gym too? :bawling: :worried:

Well, the thing is...the owner is never there when I work out...so I really don't see what difference it makes. He is usually only there between 6 and 8 in the morning.

I may just have to switch gyms. I think that there is a more hardcore gym closer to me anyway. It costs like a buck to workout or something....

Who knows...the whole situation just pissed me off because the owner didn't even have the balls to come and talk to me about it himself. I can't STAND that.

What the hell is the problem with having chalk?? It's able to be cleaned ...

I say keep using it Night Fly. But check out that other gym. You may have to be forced to.

I dont' really know what the big deal with using chalk is either...but I guess he doesn't want his froofy gym to get 'dirty'.

Give me a freakin' break!!!

y'know, we had a similar problem at our gym before Hannibal moved up here. No chalk, and no bringing a box in to squat on. So we made do without the chalk, and used a bench to squat on.

Had it been economical to do so, we would've switched at the time. It's a nice fitness center, but it's no place to train as a powerlifter.

hey just curious, do any of you guys have it to where you can put a hold on your membership and start it up later without paying the activation b/s? I do and i put mine on hold, the stupid biotch tells me it wont go into effect for a month and theyre gonna charge me for aug 15 - sep 15 when im not even gonna use it. Is this normal?

Night Fly: To bad you don't know any big guys that could flip his car or put a 400 pound atlas stone on his hood...

that is horrible. they didn't allow chalk in my old gym either. that's why i workout at home now. i got way too tired of the stuff i had to put up with. they were always telling me i was doing things wrong and this and that. whatever...

I lift at home and use all of the chalk that I want but to be fair
to my local rec center gym management, they allow chalk and
even supply it.

If the owner of your gym does not give and allow you to use
chalk, find one that does.

My yuppie gym banned chalk or any kind of powder when the whole "Anthrax Scare" was going on. freaking lame. They also play classical music and easy listening through the PA system. Try 20 rep squats listening to "In the Arms of the Angel" or whatever the fuck that song's called.

I would refer to your membership agreement. There may be something in there about HOW the owner has to establish the rules that you're required to follow as part of your agreement. Maybe you can find a loophole that will let you get out of your agreement, if nothing else.

Holy shit bro i hear ya! I have to listen to 98 degress while i'm deadlifting, those stupid girls back there are worthless.

I was going to do this, but for some reason, the gym has lost my contract. Ever since I have been a member at this gym something has been screwed up. There have been several different owners/workers...and the members have been almost like employees at a restaurant....they workout there for a bit and then go on somewhere else.

what do you need chalk for?

Because when I lift heavy, I use it for my grip. I don't use gloves or straps....so it is the only thing the keeps my hands from getting sweaty so I can hold on to the bar. That's why.

:)

No chalk at my gym either (there is even a sign saying so). Yeah, its lame, but I'm OK with it.

However, if it bothers you that much Night Fly, then take your business elsewhere. I know I wouldn't give my hard earned cash to a gym I disliked, especially if I thought i was mistreated.

that's coincidence that they lost your contract, however I think your contract should be similar to those of the other members.
Ask for a copy or ask a friend to ask for one.

I would go and check the other gym out and see what its like. Especially if the are going to nag you with this minor stuff.

I always say you vote with your wallet (or purse as the case may be). If they jerk you around, get the hell out. As far as you are concerned you are cutting their paycheck.... Just give it to someone else.
