Sex Drive Help

mjaym

New member
Ladies, I was hoping you could help me out. My gf is on birth control (organnon) and she is suffering from a really low sex drive. I know this is nothing new for many women, but I was hoping to help her find a solution. Going off birth control is the obvious answer, but neither of us feel comfortable having sex w/o it. In the past she was on ortho but could not handle the mood swings. I was curious if there were any legal supplements that she could take to increase sex drive that would not conflict with her BC, or if we could find a better type of birth control. Thanks for any help.

She needs to first talk to her Doctor about this. She can try other pills. She might have to try a few until one "fits". How long has she been on this particular one? Sometimes it takes several months to let the hormone levels stabilize, then her sex drive might come back.

There is also the Copper IUD which is non-hormonal, and just as safe as the pill (99% protection against pregnancy). This might be something to bring up with her Doctor.

Thank you for the response Daisy girl. She was on ortho for almost a year, then couldn't take it anymore. Now she has been on organon for about a year, and it is wearing on her. I don't know if this is pattern. She is going back to her doc in about a month, and will prob get on a different BC, but she is too embarassed to talk to anyone else (including doc's or nurses), so I thought I would do my part and research.

Ortho gave me bad mood swings too. I also tried Triphasil, but that was just a bad. Both killed my sex drive. I use the Copper T IUD which is great, because there are no extraneous hormones to mess with me. If she's planning on children in the future though, I wouldn't recommend an IUD. Many of the women on here have reported good results with the Yasmin, Allesse, or the NuvaRing. Since she's already prone to mood swings on BC, definitely stay away from Depo Provera (the shot).

I dont know what works for everyone else, but getting a little tipsy always helps me, give me a few glasses of wine, light some candles, and play some 112 or some kieth sweat, you have to make the mood right, you cant just say "hey baby lets have sex" like most guys will try to do

definitely stay away from the depo shot, Ive never tried it, but some of my friends have and their sex drives are non-existant, plus Ive noticed some of them gain about 15 lbs, that is so not cool

Depo Provera was a 100% effective bc method for me. As long as I was taking it I had zero interest in sex.

And I had a pretty much everlasting menstral cycle (dribbled 3 weeks a month) and generally felt like crap.

Good stuff.

Too funny, Anya!

FoxyDiva, that's some good advice, too. Sometimes a low sex drive is best handled by seduction, not a different pill.

Thanks again ladies. It seems like an ironic twist that birth control allows you to have sex more comfortably, but it lowers your sex drive. I am anxious for male birth control to come out so she won't have to be the one on it.

Wend its good to see you again. I wish you posted more often. :)

The only pill I have taken which doesn't affect my sex drive is called Orthocept 28 day. Don't confuse it w/ the other Orthotryciclen (spelling?) Anyway, I now stick only w/ Orthocept cuz its a low hormone dosage pill which gives me no mood swings, doesn't affect my sex drive, no break outs & I have light periods. She may wanna check it out. Everyone reacts differently to different pills but, this one has really worked for me, so I stick w/ it. Have her stay away from that shot thing. My friend took it & gained 20 pounds maybe more. She looked very bloated!

Orthocept is just a brand of pill prescribed. It is a low hormone level pill which gives me no sides, which is a miracle. It is one of the lowest hormone level pills on the market & also happens to work well for a friend of mine as well. The generic version of Orhtocept 28 is called Apri. I have bought the generic version & non generic version & they are both the same except the generic is cheaper. I had the same results on both generci & non generic. Your g/f may wanna give Orthocept a try before she gives up on using the pill.

thank you, I don't think my gf is going to give up on the pill, but she def. does not like the low sex drive, so hopefully I can convince her to switch.

I never had much luck with oral contraceptives. I never knew what mood I was going to be in on any particular day! It was like constant PMS!

I have tracked ovulation for many years now and use condoms during fertile times. It's worked fine for us. Just something to consider. But I must add that it took some time to figure out the pattern. You must use condoms in the meantime.

We just use condoms all the time. Used correctly, they're just as effective as the pill, and they have the added advantage of easy cleanup!

(Thanks, Anya! That's so nice of you to say.)

You guys are young, so it may take some time to figure out what works best for you. The pill never agreed with me & since I never wanted kids, my hubby volunteered for the snip & sex is soooo great with no worries!!

I really wish my hubby would go for the snip. I'm thinking of tubal ligation myself (I've had kids already, I'm done, thanks), but that's major surgery compared to a vasectomy. But he still won't let them come near his package with any sharp instruments, I'm afraid. Maybe when he gets tired of paying for condoms...we go through a box in a couple of days...

trust me, the minute I am done having kids i will get a vasectomy. But I am only 20 so that won't be for years.

Wend, it was funny, the p-work for the snip took longer than the procedure. The procedure took 12 minutes, literally. My hubby said it was no problem.

Anyone who decides to get it done, just remember to keep ice on it for the 2-3 days after to avoid swelling which is what causes the pain. Men who claim it hurt probably didn't keep the ice on it.

just wanted to throw this out there since i didnt know- i have a copper iud but i have had a child....i went to 3 docs before i decided to get one- and each said they do not like to- or would not- place one in a woman who has not had a pregnancy...whether carried to full term or not since the uterus is less likely to expell the iud once it has already had a "foreign object" in it. i am happy with mine, although the cramps are absolutely unbearable sometimes.

My wife was on the pill when we first became active. It messed with her hormones a lot and she was angry all the time. Not much fun. It did alleviate her severe cramping though. After about a year of that, she decided to try depo-provera. She loved it. No mood swings, no cramps, no period at all. Her sex actually increased a bit because she wasn't moody and there were never any "bad time of the months". She is off it now though since we are going to start working on a family. For reference, I am 22 and she is 21.

Good luck!

Jens, he's gonna do it! But we've got to wait a little...it's elective, so he'll have to pay $$ for it. But at least now he wants to. I'll be sure he keeps the ice on it.
