Severe tailbone pain doing deadlifts

About 5 days ago, I was doing stiff-legged deadlifts in the gym when, on around the 7th rep, I felt a sharp pain on and around my tailbone and lower back. I had to actually put the weight down and walk like an old man for about ten minutes, when the pain finally eased and I could move around normally again. Now, a few days after this incident, I have this pain around my tailbone right at the top of the buttocks on either side. It hurts to bend over and flares up after I play soccer.

Does anyone know what exactly I could have done to myself and what caused it? I was only using a light weight which I had previously used for deadlifts and my back was arched and not rounded, so why did I feel this sharp pain in my tailbone and lower back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like it might be a pinched nerve. Depending on how bad it is they can pretty much cripple you. Usually it doesn't wear off that quick though (only 10 minutes???). Any history of back problems?

If something was broke or fractured you would be having pretty much constant pain I think.

Do you stretch before you lift or play soccer? I would suggest the next few times out stretch out your lower back REALLY good before and after and see if that helps.

If it keeps up I would go see a doc.

Yeah, it's not too bad at the moment, just hurts to bend over at the waist. I do have a history of back problems as my doctor says I might actually have Schuermann's Disease which is a common back condition which increases curvature of the spine. I do stretch before soccer and weights but probably not enough for my lower back. I'll see how it feels for the next few days and then maybe go for a doctor about it.

Sounds like a pinched nerve to me. I did that once with heavy deadlifts. Came up, got a little sloppy on form and had to drop the weight. I actually blacked out for split second and then had to sit down for about 20 minutes before I felt good enough to walk around without puking. The tailbone pain you describe kicked in for me the very next day and stayed with me for about a week. Like a jackass I never got it checked out and it just went away completely after about 6 weeeks. A year later I told my doc about it and he had an xray done just to check it out, and I was fine. He told me I probably just pinched a nerve. The one good thing I did, was I stopped training all together for about 2 weeks.

my money is on a pinched nerve, i sometimes get pain while doing heavy deadlifts in that area which might be a similar thing

you answered your question. The dr says you have a back condition. Confer with doc and ask if stiffs are ok........
