on heavy days (3x4) 85% max. sometimes i get real light headed on dead lifts and i start seein sparkles. u can say im a newbie but i was just wanderin if this is bad for myself. maybe its cuz im over doing it? its no big deal really n it probably wont affect my lifting routine because im trainin my ass off cuz its will be my last year of high school football. so basically im askin if this is normal for people who are just simply training their hardest.

Yes - these feelings do occur. I would just suggest a few things...

Make sure you are deadlifting properly. I am in no way saying you are not, just try to read through some of the threads about deadlift form and make sure you are educated about it.

When you see these spots or sparkles, it is blood pressure related. In PL while performing lifting movements we hold our breathe to get tight and then the force of blood to the head, etc. from the weight lifted creates this feeling of lightheadedness. Make sure you practice proper breathing technique, it is so important and many people may not consider it. Training to perform your deadlift (and other lifts) with the same accuracy and detail each time you lift will help you to become acclimated to the physical effects and your body should respond for you.

Try to think about eating properly or adequately before training (at least try to have eaten a protein/carb ratio at ~ 2hr prio if lifting at 430-500 for example. Not sure when your lunch is, but if you can at least get something in ~2- 2 1/2 hrs before you train - you'll find it helpful. You just want to make sure the lightheadedness isn't your glucose level dropping.

Good luck to you.

when i first started heavy squats and dl.. i use to get the same thing.. seemed like once I built up endurance and improved my technic (which includes proper breathing) the sparkles went away..

For me I felt like my body wasnt used to the extreme strain.. Once my body adapted to it, never came back...

I beleive you get used to it over time, when you push your body to it's limits, these things will occur. Regardless if it's a one rep max or set of 15, when you push your body to it's extreme, your gonna see stars. Just like getting blind sided during a kick off, it happens.

Now when you start popping blood vessels, that too will eventually stop, again until you push your body to its absolute limit.

I kind of actually like seeing a few stars after a 1x3 on deads. It kind of lets me know I am pushing myself, but I also always reflect back and figure out that that last rep is so damn hard I probably tense up a little and hold my breath causing a little oxygen deprivation to my head and thus the stars.

I've seen burst blood vessels, but I can't imagine doing it myself. Does it hurt?

Never hurt me, usually happens when you get that feeling where your whole head is swollen, especially cheeks and eyes.

Just looks crazy sometimes, especially when you pop them in your eyes, just takes a while to learn how to strain, I used to pop them all of the time, thought i had high blood pressure, just wasn't use to the strain, happens to me a lot when doing good mornings.
