scrapbooks

There's a professional crafters exhibit near my house. To me, professional cafter means woodworkers, glass artists, sculptors, potters, furniture makers, textile designers, even professional knitters, weavers, etc.

I went with a friend who makes hand glazed tiles (I do something else). When we went to the desk to register, the woman said, "you're not scrapbookers are you?"
"scrapbookers?"
"yeah, we have a ton of 'scrapbook art' already."

I asked what that was, and she said she has companies exhibiting 'hole punchers', 'special scissors', 'novelty paper', and some people who make scrapbooks for a fee.

this has become a professional craft? the thing that middle america homemakers do by pasting family pics into a book and writing little captions under it? This seems like a huge waste of time to me.

i know this thread probably does too to most of you. its just a wierd trend I see- bored and out of shape people trying to turn their laziness into something serious (like suing mcdonalds for making them fat).

scrapbooking looks like an enormous waste of time and a "craft" for those who don't have an ounce of talent or originality.

On the other hand, I could see new moms and dads doing it when they are still in that phase where they are obsessed with their babies and think everyone else lives to see their baby photos too.

;)

isn't that just called a 'photo album'? (i don't even do that- i prefer to put all my pictures in a drawer and carry that around with me).

Hey now...I have scrapbooks for my kids. I have not worked on them in a very long time though. It takes a lot of time to make them and I just can't find time to do it.

Scrapbooking is big business. Like any other talent you have the ones who are not creative and ones that can make beautiful works of art. It's not as easy as it sounds. Taking a piece of wood and scrolling my name into it, is a waste of good firewood, requiring no talent or originality. I equate my lifelong passion of quilting to scrapbooking. Taking that one piece of fabric or paper and creating something that will last a lifetime.

I guess I am still a hippie :) now where's my pipe?

quilting is different from scrapbooking.

making a scrapbook is not a talent. making a quilt is.

and satanic goatslayers wife killing thread gets locked in lieu of this? i bet if you polled (which i know someone will do now mentioned) whether you'd rather be wife killing or scrap booking, wife killing would win, hands down. even wives want to kill other wives....

Making a quilt requires talent and skill (at least to do it well). ;)

this thread makes me feel like puking...

on an animal or something.

Don't hate on it until you see a book done by someone with talent..
Works of art.. And not easy if done right.

These people go crazy for all kinds of crap and tools and stamps and cutouts etc.

I should know, my wife is into this ...
Not crazy like, but still, she has the goods

do they sit on your shelf like a photo album?
I'm sure some of them are really cool, and page layout and design is a definate skill, but would you call that a 'professional craft'?

[QUOTE but would you call that a 'professional craft'?[/QUOTE]

Yes if you make money off it. I know several women who make hundreds of dollars off one book and have a waiting list. Sounds crazy!

Yes they do and Yes I would...

The covers are also decorated and much like any other craft (wood carving, glass blowing, sculpture etc) it can't easily be done by just anyone like building a shelf out of 2x4's following instructions.

It takes an artfull eye IMO
