School zone speeding ticket... *WTF*?????

Uh, ok, what the FUCK is this all about? I was pulled over for allegedly doing 36mph in a school zone, when in fact I never entered the school zone. It was a speed trap (about 3 or 4 cop cars) and I saw them clear as day from miles away. I'm there doing my 30-36 in the normal speed zone and then I pass the "School Zone Ahead" sign. Knowing that it's a school zone during school hours and that there are cops ahead, I begin to slow down. Suddenly the cop jumps out a few hundred feet away into the middle of the street motioning for me to pull over. I continued slowing down, looked at my speed, saw that it was 15mph, looked in front of me and I see the "welcome to school zone" sign and the big white SCHOOL writing on the ground. The cop clocked me BEFORE I entered the school zone, at which point I was doing the normal speed limit! Fucking bastards want me to pay $323! Wtf can I do about this travesty of justice besides bend over for it?

He claimed the school zone began at X feet from where he was standing and that he clocked my distance at less than that, indicating that I was in the school zone. This, however, is impossible because I saw the school zone sign in front of me when he motioned for me to pull over.

Yea, I know, the classic story of "I didn't do it," but this is an Internet chat board and I have absolutely nothing to gain by lying about it here and no matter if everyone here believes me, it will not have any effect on how this turns out, so I assure you all that I'm telling the absolute truth here and need some advice.

Sushi X, you said call and appeal? Do you mean actually taking it to court, or is there something else I can do about this before having to talk to a lawyer/step in a court room. I don't have time to waste in traffic school, nor do I have any desire whatsoever to pay this absurd penalty for this non-crime.

we have to keep our kids safe from people like that. driving 40 in a school zone!!!!!!! the 20 mph limit is there so you can brake on a dime. it is much harder to avoid hitting kids when you are going 36 in a school zone.

you are given the option to take it to court of call and discuss it with a court rep. i'd call and see what they tell you, if they don't say much i'd call a lawyer and just ask him/her about it. if you have to go to court i'd go prepared. charts, exact times, ect. make it worth the effort.


if all else fails, then call ryan. he'll have the aclu on them in seconds, of course you'll still pay later on when you are taxed half you pay for their fees.

I do plan to look into a lawyer for this. Though I'm sure I could argue it myself, I am not well-versed in bullshit laws, so I don't want to end up with my foot in my mouth. My main concern is whether or not this is "fight-able," for everyone who was allegedly a police officer or a lawyer told flexed1 a few days ago that he was fucked for his speeding violation.

So I'm told... yet I'm also told that you're fucked 99.9% of the time. Both statements can't be right. My girl got a few tickets in a short period of time and tells me that one of those "Ticket Clinics" where you pay $50-$70 will defend you and free you from having to pay the ticket and increased insurance, etc... yet any cop you ask will say "That crap doesn't work. I've never lost a ticket trial, blah blah blah I am ticket god."

A few days before that date, get an extention to the date for a later date(It's your right)

Chances are the cop will barely be able to make the first court date and likely will not be notified of the extention date so probably will not make it to court.

Warik, I dont' know where you live so I have no idea of what the traffic courts work like where you are at, but everytime I get a ticket I get a lawyer to handle it and it is always either dismissed outright or I just have to pay a smaller fine for court costs etc. and it doesn't go on my traffic record. The lawyer just negotiates a settement. It has ALWAYS worked for me. good luck.

This advice is outdated. Hearings are usually scheduled only on the days that your cop can be there to present his tickets. For example, Officer Dickwad gets the second Tuesday of the month, and all the citations he issued are tried that day. he comes to court once a month.

If you postpone, you can be 99.9% sure that your new date will be hte second Tuesday of the following month, or whatever else is convenient for Officer Cocksmoker.


I really feel badly for you. This is such shit. Here is what I have done, with some success: Write to the DA's office and determine the ADA who is handling your case. Explain ot them that you are busy, woth work, school, etc, and that while you dispute the charge, you may be willing to plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Often, they'll reduce it. This is the same thing an attorney will do if you hire one, except he'll make the offer in court, so he can bill you $500.

It is unlikely you'll win outright in a hearing. I'm sorry that happened to you. Good luck.

I heard from a reputable source, i.e. experienced cop who has no reason to lie to me, that they are all bullshit... but then again, he didn't work in S. Florida so things may be different here.

I don't mind paying a reasonable sum for the lawyer. My only concerns are the points on my license and the increased insurance costs. Unbelievable... wtf is this... speeding in the first degree? Conspiracy to commit speeding with malicious intent... yup... that's it. I've never agreed with speeding tickets even before I started driving. We'd see someone speed by and someone would say "I hope he gets a ticket" and my little 12 year-old ass would be like: "What the hell for? He's not hurting anyone."

Ok. i'll explain. The Ticket Clinic is the name of an attorneys office. You hear their annoying commercials on the radio all the time. Call them. They will do the rest. And it is different. First off, they aren't omnipresent, and they dont have offices up here in Gainesville. I got a ticket up here and called a local traffic attorney. Well, they charge 148 dollars (as opposed to the Ticket Clinic who charges 69 dollars). And they didnt even get me off the fuckin ticket. The lawyer called me and told me they managed to not get any points on my license, like i would be happy to hear that. When i said what about the tciket, he told me i still had to pay that. THE TICKET CLINIC WILL GET YOU OUT OF THE TICKET.
