Sauna and fat burning

TENPACK

New member
I've heard so much conflicting evidence on this but I wore a heart rate monitor in the sauna today andmy heart rate soared to 150bpm and stayed there. How can this not have fat burning effects?

I can breathe really fast also and raise my heart rate up.
Does that mean I'm burning fat?

Maybe after awhile, because when you pass out from doing that you can't eat any food and you lose some weight. :)

sit in a freezer if you want to burn more calories, your body works harder trying to keep its temp up than it does to cool itself down.

Ha ha!! That's the nail on the head and many wouldn't even think so. Its a vicious cycle too if you think about it - you lean down and then you get colder when you're leaner...and then you burn more fat...and get colder... :cold:

Okay - I'll stop.

Not true. It has a terrible rebound effect. One of the reasons the body stores fat is for insulation. If you are regularly in -20 weather you will be more fat than if you are regularly in hot sunny weather.

I think that is what we are saying...? The body when cold burns fat more readily. The "shiver" is a body's mechanism for generating heat and raising the metabolism. For the body to try and warm itself - it must find a way to raise the metabolism and internal temperature, i.e. thermogenesis - the process by which the body generates heat. Shivering thermogenesis occurs when your muscles produce heat upon exposure to a cold environment. If you are burning fat, then you are burning it - its not as one who is sitting in a sauna, losing water and then upon hydrating again - regains the water weight lost through sweat.

So - if you said as above "If you are regularly in -20 weather you will be more fat than if you are regularly in hot sunny weather." - I would agree and we are on the same page I think?

how about sitting in a hot or cold kitchen (pick one) and NOT EATING AS MUCH!

hehehe.

thought I'd add some levity to the situation.

since we are sortof nitpicking on calorie burning.....its actually known that fidgeters burn more calories than non-fidgeters....just a little trivia.
