(Atlanta, GA) -- Although it's hardly grounds for celebration, the state of Georgia is no longer last in the United States in SAT scores. The honor this year goes to neighbor South Carolina. Georgia's test scores rose three points to an average of 987 in 2003. South Carolina's scores dropped three points to 986 so the Peach state lost the bottom spot by a single point. Nationally, the average score is 1026 out of a possible 16 hundred. Both Governor Sonny Perdue and Georgia Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox made a campaign issue of improving Georgia's low scores. Cox said she is encouraged by the three-point gain. A Perdue spokesman said efforts by his administration are paying off.
