SARS more dangerous than AIDS...

The biggest thing to worry about is how it will affect the economy. I know that sounds annoying, but listen. Consider Hong Kong. The daily number of new infections has stabilized in Hong Kong. That means that the total number of people infected at any given moment will also stabilize. Even if you live in Hong Kong, if you take many precautionary measures you *probably* won't become infected.

Now we need to worry about how SARS will stretch our resourcefulness and harm the world economy as it spreads.

I'm still aghast that they actually came out and admitted it.

Loss of face is a HUGE deal in China.

And it came out of a Politburos members mouth no less!

That took balls.

The Chinese government needs to scrap the whole shame filled / detractor killing / victim playing act. They need to wake up and haul ass.

Stop with the doomsayers shit. This is so reminiscent of the environmentalist crap that the earth will die from plagues, famine and lack of resources, which have all fallen to the side as hysteria.

This is, as of yet, not even quite a SuperBug, which is a difficult term to pin down, since just because an organism is not killed with a present drug, does not mean that a drug will not be found effective. Of the reports that I have seen mentioned in the media, the largest mortality rate still looks no higher than 10%. Without more information on the patient populations and backgrounds, we don't have any information to determine what groups are more susceptable to this disease or to risk of death from it. The influenza virus kills more each year than this disease, yet I don't see everyone running to the hills to escape the Flu.

People are so fearful and irrational of what they do not understand, so they fail to place it in its proper perspective. Diseases happen, it is a fact of nature. Bacteria and viruses have yet to wipe us out and we have had thousands of years for them to do it. Years later we will most likely place SARS and West Nile in the same perspective that we now place influenza, RSV, and other viral diseases.

Man you're either ignorant of the facts or just plain stupid. "Superbug" is a difficult term to pin down? Umm, lemme see, how about 'immune to any known form of medication or antibody.' Now that wasn't so hard was it?

You're the one who has a problem putting things into proper perspective. When was the last time they had executive orders drawn up for quarantines of people with the flu? Or warned against travel to major cities of the world due to the flu? Or closed down hospitals due to the flu?

They're not even sure how thing is passed from person to person as of yet.

"...doomsayers shit"? Man you said it not me. All I'm doing is keeping myself educated.

If you have a problem with that you can stick it up your ass.

I live in Toronto.

Considering the amount of people infected/die(15) compared to our population in the GTA, you have a better chance of getting hit by car than contracting SARS.

Please don't buy into the media hype about what it's saying about Toronto.

Superbugs are bacterial, such as Tuberculosis, MRSA's, VRE's, etc., not viral. There are no highly effective anti-viral medications, save vaccinations. Their effectiveness is limited by their pharmacology.

Come back when you have your degree in microbiology.

The fact is that they don't know if it's a bacteria, a virus or a combination of both. Currently people are being treated by antibiotics together with antiviral drugs. I have my degrees in Engineering but I'm able to read fortunately. I think I already told you where you can stick your degree in microbiology. If you have a problem with that PM me and I'll be happy to accomodate any ideas you may have of showing me how tough you are.

Numbers lie....

Actually, there's no way to predict mortality with much accuracy.

SARS will kill more in areas less inclined to have good health and good medical care. You could see 50% fatality in heavily populated, high population, impoverished areas before it's done. In first world nations, you might not see it go above 5% fatality.

In Hong Kong 1pm 24/4/2003:

Cumulative number of infected: 1488 (338 in health care sector)
Total number of discharged patients: 567 (128 in health care sector)
Total number of deaths: 109

The mortality rate is anywhere from 7% to 19%. Looks like it's about half way between those two figures.

Hmm.. the mortality rate of fucking with Citruscide is 100%... shoooo nuff. :)
