Let's talk about USBM.

I need to have a good convo with someone about it.

LOL, as antithetical as "USBM" is... or used to be. I've been out of the scene since '01/'02, so I'm not aware of lots of the newer stuff out nowadays, but I'm definitely down.

Can we rip on Abazagorath here? lol

And are Absu still around? I seem to remember someone leaving... Proscriptor?... and the band being on hold.

Absu have a new CD out, haha.

Most of USBM is just, I don't know... I hate to bring up where bands come from, but I mean, there's a scene in Florida for christ sake and Black Witchery say they want to get rid of all the "fake" people clogging up the scene. As if there are that many people that listen to "unholy war metal" in Florida. Dumb.

The scene out west is churning out some great stuff right now. Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice, and Twilight (all three are the same guys pretty much). Wolves in the Throne Room look like they may take over the seat vacated by Weakling as the best USBM band around.

Velvet Cacoon puts out some great stuff even though you can't believe a thing they say in interviews, haha.

Xasthur is probably the most recognizable name now which is weird. Deserved, probably, but still weird.

Thralldom is okay, I think I like Unearthly Trance more. There's some great atmospheric bits on Black Sun Resistance though.

Crebain should have a new one out soon. That should be interesting. I thought the demo was a bit silly at times.

Oh, what's up with Japan having a big scene now? Gallhammer and company. Strange.

My god, I haven't heard of a single band either of you guys mentioned except Leviathan, but I'm probably thinking of a different band with a different spelling, I dunno.

Japan... lol... only thing that comes to my head is Sigh, I think they were on Cacophonus Records, I remember their stuff in Relapse catalogues and in, eg., CoF's Vempire insert.

I'm gonna suck at this thread's conversation, lol.

have you guys heard Wehrwolfe?

not quite BM though...
Heard of but haven't heard yet. I'll check it out.

Check some of that stuff out Samoth. I'll go out on a limb and say that 70% of that you'll like. Great atmosphere. I'll dig up some audio samples.

Oh, and BM has started to pop in the weirdest places. Like Tangorodrim hailing from...Israel...

Right.

For some reason, I can see this stuff coming out of the East much quicker than rural America. I was surprised the number of BM bands we were unaware of that were mentioned in Lords of Chaos that were from outside Norway and the Scandinavian countries.

There's an Abyss Records in Indy here, but they don't carry that much... the old Metal Shop in Milwaukee closed down years ago, and thers some place I've been to a few times in Madison, but they didn't hold a candle to the metal shop. I don't have the money to spend wildly from Relapse, NBA and CM like I used to years and years ago, lol, so the new material I pick up is few and far between, usually a band I already know, or on the recommendation of an old metal friend, like Vintersorg was, but I would have gotten into his stuff anyway based on his joining Borkanagar.

Hmm... thanks.

I've always had a thing against computer/downloading music... I've always been the type to want the CD, artwork, etc. I tend to listen to entire albums and never just single songs... the whole Kazaa thing and MP3 thing I have very little experience with.

I suppose I should get with the times, especially being a broke college kid...

The Crebain music wasn't too bad, but it was also the most polished... and I hate those types of vocals. Any old Euronymus-De Mysteriis style. I've always been a HUGE Garm fan, whether Ulver, Arcturus, or anything else. I more prefer the Satyricon/Immortal-style distinguishable BM vocals, and not the Pure Fucking Armegeddon underlayed style, lol.

I wish I could remember what BM band my friend was in now so I could post his stuff.

Found 'em... THIS is why I despise MySpace:

"Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.

Crap, it'w working now, WTF? Anyway, eg., upon feeble backs, has the old Satyricon/Darkthroneish style riffing and vocals, that's more what I prefer to listen to in BM, clean Garmesque vox notwithstanding.

Singer, Nick:

I don't see the other guys on MySpace...

Arcturus's new one is pretty great. Ulver has turned into a Patton influenced avant garde rock band. Not...really...feeling it.

Agalloch kind of fits in with that style. Anaal Nathrakh has some rising clean vocals on their newer stuff. Khold is worth a look. Their new one is insanely good.

I don't know, I never really got into stuff like Bal-Sagoth or Samael. I either like really atmospheric stuff like Lurker of Chalice, Burzum influneced walls of noise like Nargaroth, or super drunk thrashy stuff like Tangorodrim.

I'll have to look into some of those.

Now, OLD Samael I like, the newer stuff took a wierd tinge to it that I'm not a fan of at all. Bal-Sagoth is cool, never been a huge fan, but I still like 'em from what I can remember, lol.

I think I'm just anal about the sound in really atmospheric bands, and vocal style. Dunno.

Samoth, PM me a mailing addy and I'll send you a few mix CDs.

Man, this is like old times. *trades mixes furiously*

Oh and I'm so damn tempted to link a few of the BM from around here just for a laugh.

PM sent, lemme try to find one of Destiss's demos to send you. I should be going home sometime in the near future (at school now).

Feel free to link some stuff up, if nothing else, for some name exposure. Or, if they're really horrid, for some laughs.

:cow:

The guys in Unholy are really freaking weird. I met them in a Denny's before they went recording. They just seem to travel the desert in search of places that have a certain atmosphere. I gave them my contact info because I wanted to do an interview and they sent me their MySpace page. Apparently, they refuse friend requests and keep resetting their page views. It's like they want people to hear their stuff but they don't want anyone to like them or for their name to spread. It's strange.

I kind of like their stuff and I kind of don't. It's like a wall of noise but with something not quite right laboring under it all.

Anyway, yeah, Sothis is playing here in a couple of weeks. I'll be there checking everything out. I need some background since I'll be writing an article on the local black metal scene.
