I have a friend who went through a very similar scenario. Looking back on it, it was found that several things caused problems ....
Just eating a lot won't do it. You need to eat the right things, (and to a small degree eat them at the correct times in relation to your workout and sleeping),
Stress raises cortisol levels, and if you are under a LOT of stress, that will pretty much stop or lessen any gains,
Training causes localized stress on micelles – but when OVER trained they are so busy just trying to RECOVERY that they never get healed and then grow BEYOND where they were prior to a workout. I am convinced that many of the volume training programs that people do will overtrain many guys (but no one wants to hear that, they just do more sets...)
Lack of sleep will mess anyone up. Period. 5 hours is NOT enough.
You do NOT grow on the gym. You grow by (first overloading the muscles and then providing a time for) allowing the muscle to RECOVER and them to GROW BEYOND ITS PRE-STRESSED SIZE AND STRENGTH. Lack of sleep, overtraining, stress, too many sets, and not enough days for recovery can each add to this NOT happening to the degree that it should.
Many guys will think “well, I did do a cycle, I men, yeah ... I should sleep a lot and stuff, but I did all this gear, shouldn’t I STILL get gains”. Yes, but part of the problem here is that when are ON, they tend to workout more, harder, heavier, and do more sets .... so yes, your body can handle more, but you are also adding to the stress level a lot anyway.
Besides – you did have gains. You gained 7 lbs in a few months time despite not sleeping enough – that is quite amazing actually.
I am curious - at 43 - what was your post-cycle regimen, and do yo feel you recovered quickly/fully?
