is there anything you can do medically or otherwise to get rid of shin splints. i cant even trot a 1/2 lap w/out fkn pain

Shin splints are a bitch. My shin splints last year turned into a stress fracture to my tibia, so be careful. You can ice then if you 'have' to be in training right now...ice and stretch. ice on 20 min, off 30 min...repeat cycle. If you don't have to, then stay off of them. Anytime they are warm, stretch them.

You'll prob get more replies and good feedback if you posted this in the Training Board.

Shin splints can sometimes occur because of a muscle imbalance between your calves and your anterior tibialis ("shin muscle"). Your calves are probably a lot stronger than your ant. tib. - so try working on getting rid of that imbalance to see if that helps at all.

Try walking around on your heels (toes in the air, you'll look funny, but you'll *really* feel your ant tib). Do like 30 seconds on heels, 30 seconds regular, keep repeating. I always do a couple before sprints to make sure everything is warm.

Also, could be your shoes. How old are they? (worn out?) Are they *running* shoes? (you shouldn't run in cross trainers)

It also depends on what you are taking. If you are on dbol or fina there isn't much you can do till you get off.

you can take anti-inflammatory, those usually help, either that or get a compression sleeve for your shins.

your shoes could definitely be a problem as Daisy Girl stated. Do you run alot, or did you just start.

just started. my shoes are new nike air running shoes w / gel soles. & whats a compresion sleeve?

shin splints come from going beyond what your muscle can absorb in shock. say your muscles are used to only running 5 miles. then, one day out of the blue you run 7 miles. your muscles get tired and can't play the role as shock absorbers. now you have all the muscular attachments,bone,... etc. taking much more shock makin for some pain. i recommend takin it easy.

mmm....
Started off to fast/strong I guess. You have to build up. Chaning surfaces and road running can cause shin splints too. You have to build up your milage in running or you're gonna see injuries. You should break your new shoes in by walking in them for two weeks before training in them as well.
