ok, i remember hearing this rumor from a friend of mine and was wondering if there was any truth to it at all. I heard that someone taking aas could gain more by doing nothing but sitting on the couch than a guy working out everyday without the juice. any imput????????

Sorry fellas. I don't want to advocate using drugs as a substitute for hard work but actually, I read about just such a study sometime recently. The study involved a control group of men and two study groups. the control and one study group were given a workout routine and diet to follow. No protein supplements or creatine were allowed. The control group was given a placebo containing no steroids and the study group was given a steroid (can't remember which one, not methandrostenalone) at a fairly low to moderate dosage. The other study group was given the steroid as well but instructed not to work out (I think the same diet was followed however). At the end of the study (either 30 or 60 days if memory serves), both study groups had dropped some percentage of body fat and picked up lean muscle mass. furthermore, measurements of arm and thigh circumference revealed that both study groups had increased muscle size. The study group that exercised of course had more gains and more decrease in fat but the "couch potato" study group had some gains and decreased fat content non the less. The real kicker was that the "couch potato" study group on steroids had gains in mass and increased arm and thigh circumference on par with or even surpassing the control group who worked out but took no steroids.

Even if this is true, ones gains can be drastically increased with hard work and diet. Using steroids and not working out is just stupid. Why take all the risks (legal and medical) and not get all the benefit you can.

I'll try to find the study. If I do I'll post it on this thread.

that info came from an old issue of muscle media 2000 I belive it was sept. 97? it was a black and white cover and also had a study about ando. the people were put into groups that took 600mg test e and wouked out, took 600mg test e and did not wourk out, or worked out with out the test, the study lasted i belive 20 weeks, and the resolts were best gains it work out and test, no work out and test and last just workout. so actualy your friend was right. and for any one that thinks other wise why do you think the average natural lifting woman is usualy not as strong or as big as the average non lifting man test!

The study didnt say the sedentary AAS using group gained more than the group that worked out. Their gains were comparable to the non-AAS group that was working out and of course the AAS-working out group gained the most...and the non-AAS non-training group gained less than all the others.

well that settles it i guess, I will just start watching tv while on a cycle....just kidding, that is some interesting info though...thanks

Here is a journal reference:

Bhasin S et al. The effects of supraphysiologic doses f testosterone on muscle size and strength in normal men. New England Journal of Medicine. 1996(July 4);335(1):1-7.

I'd love to see the workout routine that they were told to follow. Maybe one set on ten different Nautilus machines, followed by 20 minutes of cardio 3 times a week.

Dosn't really matter though. Those are short term results. Extend the study to 6 months or a year and see what happens.

I hate reading about studies like that where the diet and workout are determined by guys who may have never touched a weight in their lives.

Give me some government grant money, a boatload of steroids, and some trusting fools........er, I mean subjects, and I'll show ya some results.

Actually Dan2232, they were told it was important to lift to failure. The people conducting this study were not idiots who wanted to see what steroids could do for someone's physique. They were medical doctors trying to develop effective therapies for legitimate medical conditions like chronic wasting disease. Look up the reference and read the paper before you make some half assed comment, OK? It chaps my ass when uninformed people denigrate legitimate scientific research because they don't agree with the outcome.
