if all i do for biceps is rows, will i get some growth? i'm guessing i'd get a lot more if i throw in hammer curls..which leads me to a different question

how long between training days can you do hammer curls and the other day have a bench workout?

ex: could i do legs, abs, and hammer curls/biceps on wednesday then have my 2nd heavy bench day on friday?

Rows will generate bicep growth but probably not as much as supinated chinups (hands facing towards you). Yates (underhanded) Rows might hit them harder, though.

....... or tear your biceps, as was the case with dorain yates....lol

i do biceps on every 3rd back day. and i work back out twice a week. 1 week i do hammer curls. the next time i do rev barbell curls.

it keeps mine big and strong.

i recently just added dumbbell curls back in. i do feel that the overhand grip works the bicep as a secondary muscle. that maybe the reason why i'm able to do these with so much weight because of my arms. LOL. tb

I had a bicep pump when I was doing my rows today. I think they definitely get hit with a lot of the pulling movements. Not that I care or anything.

u must do palms-inward grip?? that's awesome for the bi's. nobody at my gym does those..hmm maybe i need to do them!! LOL. tb

I do them both ways... mainly palms facing away... both hit my bis.

I get a good pump if I do rows with an underhand grip. After the rows I do weighted chins and 3 sets of strict barbell curls and my bi's are cashed. Sometimes I'll thrown in a couple sets of hammer curls if I'm feeling strong.

StrangeBrew on the Training board.

Welcome.

I try really hard not to feel biceps on any back exercise. I usually use a parallel grip bar for pulldowns, I can see where a palms up grip on any movement would recruit bicep assistance.

Grimm and I do curls maybe once a week for 2-3 sets if we feel like doing them. we both have over 20" arms and most of our arm work comes from rows for bis. So yes rows will do plenty for your arms.

Cheers,
Scotsman

When in doubt... I go lower in # of sets. Start with 0 Curls then gradually add 1 set, 2 sets, etc. until you find the perfect number.

I read in *sigh* Flex, that Yates tore his bicpes using an overhand grip, and that is why he switched to using an underhand grip. Who knows, maybe I am wrong.

I don't get why training biceps is so frowned upon. Lots of people here, powerlifters especially, really nail their triceps but do little to no work for biceps. Why would you purposefully get a muscular imbalance? Yes I know certain lifts hit the biceps but the same can be said about triceps.

Unless you're a powerlifter, you don't need to do direct work for either IMO. When you're a powerlifter, strengthening your triceps = strengthening your bench. Biceps don't really influence the big 3 lifts very much.

I still believe you need a balanced Bi/tri strength for a solid base of strength.

That`s not to say that the rowing and pulling movements alone don`t do that. Just that it`s a little illadvised not to strenthen antagonizing muscles equally. IMO

You might be correct. When I "isolate" my tris though, I still do it with a compound movement. Closegrip benches or elbows-in dips, for example. I still believe supinated pulldowns/chins hit your biceps really hard. I'm not a very big fan of skullcrushers.
