Roommate etiquette. Contract?

HS Lifter

New member
Ok I think I found a place.. It's in harbor city(close to dial tone in Rancho Palas Verdes).

Going to be sharing a 5 bd place with 2-3 other dudes.

Now, can someone school me on Roommating 101? I have never lived with roommates before.

Do I need a contract or no?

Thanks!

First time with roommates? Good luck! I've never had a "contract" but we usually established courtesy rules...rotations of cleaning, rules about food, etc. Just to avoid misunderstandings and conflict later. But conflict will always happen anyway. I'll never have a roommate again till I get married lol.

Roommates suck ass. I was finally fed up by my late 20's and said never again. I just found a way to afford a decent place by myself.

I hated it. You can establish rules, but good luck with them. Everyone is already use to the way they live, good luck trying to change them. Wife is now my roomate and i love it

Yeah, I hope it goes well. The only thing that really sets me off is loud music when Im trying to sleep and people fucking with my shit. Other then that, Im cool.

Roommates can suck ass.. Luckily I never had any, except women.

Make sure they pay their bills.
Make sure you can trust them.
Make sure they know their mommy dont live their and to clean up after themselves.

Good luck bro!

I'm going to being paying them.... so thats not an issue.

Trust? We will see.

They describe themselves as clean(Doesnt everyone?)

We will see, only need this room for 6-9 then maybe I can buy a home somewhere in socal(Good luck to me lol)

The best advice I can give you is to make your room as pimp as possible. Make it your holy sactuary. I had my room set up like a mini livingroom. Entertainment stand, futon as a couch and bed, chairs, bong. Kept my dresser in the closet to maximize space. My rooies new when my door was shut not to fuck with me.

I just bought a nice house on the e coast, 4 bedroom, 3 stories plus a finished basement for 50K.

I was wondering, how old are you?

I don't mind having a roomate (one). I'm a hard ass and have no problem telling people how it is and if they don't like it get the fuck out.

I have lived with six other guys before on a lake, was so much fun but alot of work keeping shit clean, beer can and bottles all over every morning. If they are your bro's it makes it easier, but if you have never met them it becomes a bit wierd. I wouldn't let anyone live with me I didn't know.

Good luck bro...

wow, good luck. i had roommates for years in the navy even when i was married. when we went on the boat for 6 months at a time i had 60 roommates. before i was married i lived in the barracks and had 3 roommates and no matter how many rules you set and schedules you make it NEVER goes the way you plan. just learn to bite your lip and work things out calmly cause after a while it will get to you and you will snap. especially when your drunk ass roommates come home drunk as shit and eat all YOUR food and then dont bother to replace it and call YOU a lier cause THEY cant remember what they did the night before.

good luck

I'm a total clean freak too. I had a roomate once that was a slob beyond anything that words can describe. He was just plain filthy. He would puke in his room and not cleat it up for days. His room smelled like a horses ass mixed with a hockey teams locker room. I was so glad to see him go.

Just try to have fun. Make friends with em. And be chill. I'm a really irritable person. Stuff gets under my skin easily. Hope you're not.

I will really try and have fun and be "bros". I am chill but some things bother me.

We shall see.... Riding down tomorrow and will check out the place/have lunch and hopefully close the deal because my new job starts on the 23rd.

+1

This is exactly how I have always been. Invest in a nice thin screen tv if you don't have one arleady. It saves a lot of space in the bedroom and you can put it on top of your dresser if it doesn't fit in ur closet.

I have had good roomates and I have had bad ones. If you have good roomates you will spend more time in the "common" areas, but if not then it will be like living in the dorms and all your time will be spent in the room aside from trips to the kitchen and the bathroom.

What part of socal are you moving to? Im in LB. Do you ride ur GSXr a lot? I have an 06 CBR F4i that has become more of a commuter than a toy.

You'd actually be pretty close to my work. What kind of work do you do? or will you be doing? Are you in socal now? When do you need to move by?

Well if you end up moving out of the armpit hit me up some time we can go ride or go party!!

For sure! I will be moving for sure, so yeah.

I've always lived with roommates and never had any contract, I try to pre screen people well enough before deciding to move in.

Only had one bad roommate, and it didn't cost me anything monitarily, I just found someone to take my place and moved out.

How is the bike scene down there?

Well there are plenty of riders out here... I see a lot by the beaches. But I haven't gotten into the scene a whole lot. I want to now that summer is here.

I have only been canyon riding a couple times. but I had a good time, and I want to get into it more.

Cool cool....

I hear bike theft is a major issue.....

A buddy of mine had his stolen in irvine. He lived in a gated apt complex and the parking was gated as well. he had it in his stall and he had a wheel lock on it..... Some people. and that was a few years back before gas was this bad.

I leave mine locked up outside with a wheel lock. Its been knocked over once, but other than that I haven't had any issues yet(Knock on wood).but there really are three Fed agents that live in my complex. but they are cutsoms agents. So I feel a little safer, But I have been paranoid lately. I think I will have to buy a chain to keep it safe.

ive had a lot of housemates (good and bad) and imo to keep out of trouble, i would do the following:

1) keep food/coffee/toiletries (except paper/hand soap) separate and DO NOT SHARE. youd be amazed at how much it can piss you off that xyz roommate has used the last of YOUR coffee for the 3rd fucking time. its the pettiest shit, but youll happily bust into their room and kick their teeth in over it

2) all bills to be paid in full on time immediately. if your roommates cant afford to pay for their stuff up front and you pay it on their behalf, youre setting yourself up for a situation where the same bill comes the next month/quarter, and not only havnt they paid you back, but they want you to spot them again

3) separate public and private areas. your room is yours and will not be entered, ever, without your permission. if you dont have some sanctuary, youll get really irritable, really fast. my latest housemate walked into my room at 3am to ask me a question about girls. it resulted in me fearing that he would walk in while iw as in there sleeping/napping, i couldnt relax, and i started getting snappy (if you think im a prick on EF, you should see the real thing) so i sat him down and let him know that going into my room was innappropriate, and would eventually result in a beating.

4) try to get housemates who are about as rich as you are. if theyre poorer, you risk mooching and resentment, and if theyre richer, they sometimes undermine you. ive had poorer housemates end up owing me thousands and constantly mooching all my stuff, and some richer housemates completely disregarding things that i found important

5) get a house that lends itself to housemates ie a place with a dishwasher (so you can put dirty stuff right in the dishwasher rather than having dishes endlessly piled in the sink

6) own your own frying pan/pot. sharing pots/pans doesnt really work, becuse someone usually cooks, doesnt clean the pan because its hot, forgets about it, and person #2 has to wash it. the first 38 times it happens, you dont mind. then you hit the prick in the head with it 25 times and call an ambulance

the trick is to stop stuff building up that will make you mad - because once youre mad, youll stay mad. all someone has to do is talk and youll want to kill them

good luck. i think im going to boot my housemate when i get back. i think the edward longshanks lobbing out the window trick is a goer :)

well I think golden just covered all the bases (holy shit 5 paragraph essay there)

I can't have roommates. I pay $665 each month to live on my own. Sure, it's expensive, but fuck, it's worth it.

My mess, my problem. I have had best friends as roommates turn into my hated enemy, it's not worth it.

People you don't know, it might be worth it, just make sure you don't give a fuck and are prepared to deal with it.

I couldn't. That's how I am tho, you may be different....

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Closed the deal! Moving in on the 19th.... 15 minutes away from the beach.

I hope everything goes well, met the dudes today. They seem cool and we all have a lot in common. But we will see what happens.

Also, socal is EXPENSIVE as fuck and most people cant even afford their own place so they have to room. CHewy, 665 seems dirt cheap to live on your own.

Worse comes to worse, Im moving out and crashing at razorgunz' place.lol

I've only had one roomate, but he was badass. We got to different schools now but still shoot the shit and hang out. But we were paired on having similiar personalities too. IDK about random roomates.

Yea, I guess $665 isn't to bad to live alone, but I keep thinking how much money I could save w/ roomies. I could pay $300 with 3 other people and have a badass place around here. Of course, Cali is gonna be MUCH more expensive than the good 'ole midwest.

How much did you end up paying?

Not bad! If added internet, cable, electric into my rent it's over $800/month.

And I ain't near no damn water, lol.

lol yeah, its actually not that bad..... Have 2 housemates and possibly a third.

5 bd/3 bath.. should be enough room for all of us to breathe....

3 bath, 3 roommates, sounds like a good deal to me. I actually think I could handle roommates better if we each had our own bathroom.

Nothing worse than seeing someone else's pubes lying about :)

you just met these guys? man that makes it that much more likely things will go wrong and people will gang up on someone easily. be careful and always keep it in your mind that you may have to split quick or others will split but either way it sucks ass but be reay. good luck.

I never had this problem. I always had close friends as my roomates. Just cross your fingers that you get a good batch of roommies that will respect you and can live with ya.
