I practically grew up on a roof. My dad had four brothers and three were carpenders. My best friends dad was a roofing contractor back in the seventies.I got a job roofing for them when I was thirteen the summer after seventh grade. It was in the middle of July and soo hot it was almost like torture on top of those houses.
A bundle of asphalt shingles weighed 80 pounds at that time and it was all that I could do to tote ( tote: nineteen seventies southern trade slang trade terminology for picking up a bundle of shingles and slaming and laying them across your shoulder and then walk up the ladder and up the roof and then drop the bundle of shingles across the ridge) a bundle of shingles. Even though I wanted to quit I wasn't going to and have my best friend think that I couldn't handle it. I planned on hanging on until school started. After a few months my body stared getting toughened up to roofing and my friends dad kept calling me to help because I was starting to getting pretty good at not only toting but also laying shingles. When I was 14 I could tote bundle after bundle like it was nothing and even most of the older guys couldn't hang with me. I would sometimes tote two bundles up just to show off because in those days in our area roofing was like a competition similiar to lifting weights, who benches the most or does the most reps, who could tote the most or lay the most shingles.
When I turned 15 I could tell that I had gotten alot stronger and just to show off I would set and position one bundle on my shoulder and then a couple of the guys would set two more on my shoulder. Then I'd tote up a square ( square- material to cover 100 square foot which was 3 bundles at 80 lbs a bundle- 240 pds square.) It was a good show off stunt that I'd do a few times a month. The old guy I worked ( He was one rough looking old codger. His skin looked like cross between leather and elephant hide.He made that old guy who was Rockys boxing trainer in the movies look like a teenager. Getting your skin fried and frooze on top of houses for forty years will do that to you.)told me I'd pay for that when I got older. I'd laugh to myself thinking what does he know with his old worn out ass. That was my mindset when I was 16 and a bullit proof no-nothing no it all. When I went back to school my junior year I then realized my transformation. I had always been just an average size kids but now I was one of the most muscular kids in school.I stood out in the crowd and my last year was a blast. One of the biggest football players in my high school would joke to me about how it wasn't fare for me to be all muscled up when I didn't have to lift weights like he did. I'd laugh and tell him to come out and tote a hundred plus bundles a day when it was already so hot and humid you couldn't hardly breath. We were good friends and even though he held several school weight lifting records I could still beat him arm wrestling.
