Ok, so i started doing this to target the hamstrings... I did them yesterday and my hamstrings are not even sore but my lower back is KILLING me. I obviously did them wrong... are there certain guidelines to follow to be sure you do not use your lower back too much?

The Romanian deadlift and a straight legged deadlift are very similar. I believe with the romanian as you take the bar down your suppose to push your ass out more.

i watched a tutorial on the romanian on youtube... and i believe you are correct... i will definately incorporate that next time... i guess i was essentially just lifting heavy weight the way they always tell you not to with your lower back!!!

What you were doing was a straight legged deadlift, which isnt a bad thing it greatly improves your lower back. If you were really sore the next day maybe you should continue to do them to get a strong core.

so why do you always hear folks say, don't lift with your lower back, use your legs instead?

Heres a little tip that really helped me, as you are lifting it, think of it as contracting your butt to pull yourself up...if that makes sense. So as opposed to lifting it with your back, someone is pulling your pelvis forward.

I am bit confused. The only dead lifts I ever do are Noral Deadlifts to target back. And I do stiff legged deads: Feet roughly shoulder wdith apart and dead lift but with locked knees.

Another I have seen: A guy had his legs stiff but spreqad wide, alot wider than shoulder width and was doing deads noramlly apart from the legs. Anyone know what these are called?

For a Romanian deadlift, pretend to drag the bar as close to your legs when you go up. That is what I do for Romanian deadlifts.. I guess it kinda forces your butt to go out a bit more..

yup keep bar contact with the legs thru the rep, keep the chest puffed out and push your ass back to lower the weight, let the knees bend a bit as you go down but not as much as an actual deadlift obviously.

but if your lower back is a lot weaker than your hamstrings, it could still get sore anyway i guess, the movement does work both muscle groups. but pushing the ass back and keeping a high chest will put a good stretch on the hammies which usually gets them quite sore

My guess would be that you probably started out with too much weight. Try lowering the poundage until you get the form down.
