My grandfather was a very stern man and an officer in the Deutsches Reichsheer during WWI. I picked up my shitty German because it was spoken at my grandparent's and the family drove two hours there every weekend to visit the family.

My grandfather was a bitter man for the fact we gained our family lands the old fashioned way..we conquered them and it was taken away at Versailles. I'm sure he supported Hitler on principle but despised his reasons...he was an honorable man.....he was all about the Prussian values of duty and honor. ...a legacy I carry.

I come from a pre-Nazi bloodline and had I been born in Germany in the early 1920's I would have been an officer. I can tell you that Manstein hated Hitler; He referred to him as "that Austrian corporal." He took every opportunity to exclude his troops from non-combat operations like rounding up undesirables. He was approached by the bomb plotters due to his dislike of Hitler and popularity with the soldiers. As much as he hated Hitler his response was,"Prussian Marshals do not revolt." It was a big deal when Hitler made his officers swear allegiance to him and not Germany.
