Relief has been turned away

It could be looked at two ways I guess!

My Church organized effort to get food, water, nurses, and other items to NO for early tomorrow morning. I was headed that way to help.

We were told not to go.. I am hoping that these people are being taken care of. There are still people there.

Frisky, see if other cities need supplies. The police stations in D.C. and some local churches are collecting supplies for the 400 people that will be arriving this week. They are also collecting supplies to send elsewhere.

i am planning on going over to a few local shelters tomorrow

Donated yesterday to Red Cross and brought some supplies over to the local FD here to deliver to the Armory where those folks will be housed up here.

Friskness: Its a damn brave and giving thing you offered to do, I am deeply proud to be your friend.

They are turning away civilians who want to help because of the dangers and lack of training. The shootings and unrest is sited as the biggest reasons why.

They are turning away a lot of supplies because they have nowhere to store them.

At least, that is what I heard on the TV.

Maybe offer to create a makeshift animal shelter if you can find a building to use.

I'm sickened that people are being told to leave their animals behind

i am working at a shelter in pineville, la, where currently 450 people are being helped. does not sound like alot, but for a city our size, it is. we have donated clothes, food, supplies coming out of the ying yang and are now having to turn donations away due to lack of storage space. if you are hellbent on traveling our way to help out, find a central or northern part of the state and assist at one of the shelters. just because the residents have been evacuated does not mean they are out of harms way. their nightmare is just beginning,ie. coming to terms with it all. they need to be surrounded by caring understanding people, like you, who will put their on lives on hold for a brief time to say, "we care about you". if you need some help pm me.

Well, they were. I was informed last night that the busses that went to NO are coming back to DC empty. You can call the various DC agencies involved for confirmation, but for the time being, there will be no refugees brought to the armory. Not to say that it will not happen down the line, but not for a while. I was not told the reason for the change.

Interesting.

If I lived in the area I would definately help out too. Australia donated $10 mil and sent some experts across to the USA. I am glad our government stands by the US in this time of need.

What will happen to the people who were transported to Huston and other locations? Will they live in those domes indefinately or will they have to establish themselves in that area from scratch?

Great minds think alike. :)

I wonder if it was a D.C. government decision or a Federal Govt. decision.

What was the point of holding a press conference at the Wilson Building?

You do know that you have to tell me the scoop behind this (as much as you can share).

There are alot of things happening right now that can't be explained. I don't get into to politics.. but IMO.. right now Fuck politics. Fuck the paper work. Get these people somewhere safe and comfortable. If it means DC then get them there.

Fema is dragging its feet with aid due to paper work. The Mayor of NO has said he'd pay for the help and then worry about it all later. The Governor still drags her feet. Our President, after talking to The Mayor and The Governor, said he could have help in immediately and the Mayor said she needs 24hrs... WTF.

Drop all the political bullshit and lets be humane. Millions of dollars are coming in from all over the world. Lets help these people.

You know another sad thing.....rescuers are trying to take people to safety and some are refusing to go. They would rather stay in their flooded houses.

A lot of private relief efforts are trying to get into NO to provide food and water to those in their homes and that is being turned away. If they let them in to feed them the stranded people will not leave their houses.

Isn't there something they can do? Can't they force evacuation. Disease will set in, bacteria in the waters. Mosquitos are hatching larve as we speak. They will be carrying disease and will get it from the dead body's and these living people that refuse to leave.

I know its prolly against their rights but fuck it .. Go in and take them out. They continue to jeopardize the lives of other citizens because they are stubborn and clueless as to what is going on.

Like the 2 80yr old Nun's in the Convent. OMG, make them get out of there.

I totally agree. That is why the relief efforts of food and water is not being let in to NO. These relief shipments are being welcomed at shelters outside of NO because it is needed.

There has to come a time when rescuers have to take charge and take these people by force. The problem is that some of these people do not recognize the magnitude of what has happened. They have no means of knowing. They see the water but know the pumps have always pumped the water out of the city but they don't know they aren't going to be pumping for awhile.

Saw a reporter riding around with rescuers on TV and people sitting on their porches and the stranded people were saying, Tell them to cut the pumps on and get rid of this water. It is just sad.

Exactly!

Sooner or later they will have to make them leave. Better sooner than later.

and if this guy has anything to do with it, they will leave if force is needed. Gotta admire the guy.

This is the "John Waye dude" Mayor Nagin talked about. He said, Some John Wayne dude got off the doggone chopper and started cussing and people started moving.

A "take no shit" kind of guy but has compassion for the people and desperately needed there.

If push came to shove, the military could make everyone evacuate, however, although we hate it as much as everyone else, politics is involved in this shit. I have let my top blow a few times, but it proved nothing, so now, I am just trying to help where I can. I do not think about who is and isnt helping, all I know is that I am doing what I can.

As for FEMA, I have spoken with several contract FEMA workers, and have been advised that although there is still a sense of uncertainty in the ranks, everyone knows what has to be done, its just a matter of the uppers issueing the orders.

Only "relief" these people need .. is a ticket out of NO, and a new comfortable place for them to live, get a new job, and start a new life.

NO is no place to live now, or even within the next year.

If people want to stay and make things harder on themselves & everyone -- they should be on their own. We shouldn't encourage them to live in stench, get diseases and force feds to keep worrying about them staying there.

we have 1,500 that arrived at Rock Eagle today,a large 4H camp ,I'm carrying a truck load of supplies there tomorrow

Update:

I was right about the busses. Evidentally the city felt that there was too much liability in bringing people in on busses, in case they crashed. They had the military fly them here on planes instead, putting the burden of liability on the feds instead.

Looks like up to 400 people in the Armory, with the possibility of another 50 - 100 housed at the DC Police Academy and Blue Plains Job Corps facility.
