Should be able to... Just do it as you would normally.. start by booting from cd-rom, then say reinstall.. or install.. something of the sort.. Ive done it many times.. just don't do /format C!

Get drive image 2002 if you want an easy backup utility. Yea the only way XP Pro has fucked up on me is when I fuck it up myself playing around with partition magic. Other than that, it has been an awesome OS.

I suggest you make a back up of your files you want to keep.
Bottom line you will be reformating this drive. Use this tool of the link that will Low Level Format your drive this will help in alot of ways also bring the drive back to factory settings.

part way down the page in the middle you will see Download llfutil.exe click on that and it will download the program..
install it to a disk and restart machine it will boot to the disk and gives you choices to pick from you want to low level the drive..
you dont have to do this but i find with doing this fixes alot of the problems with drives. I'm not saying i know all about computers but i have been doing this line of work for the last 6 years. If this drive is a Maxtor hard drive or Quantum i suggest to do it.. other drives liek IBM , seagate or Westerndigital i would worry about doing it if you dont want but it doesnt hurt and it makes the drive truly run better. I found in my past expirence loading a O.S. over a exsiting O.S. or basicaly not reformating just cause more problems down the road adn your just saving a problems.. also before going and doing it i have found that Norton Systems Works works very well to fix a crap load of problems to. After a O.S. install and you do your chipset drivers and all the rest of the drivers and do windows updates there tends to be over 100 errors found by Nortons.. this could help too.
Have you tried any XP updates this might fix problems also.
