A family reference?? Who would want that/need it or even ask for it??

And when a company or office dissolves, ie no longer exists - and people left said company, then how can one be expected to provide a reference??

This doesn't make sense to me....

Yeah I agree.. Its only happened to me once.. I did get my GP (Doctor) to write a reference, that was exceptable.. I'm confused to why one would want a family ref.. Hmm.. thats a thinker!

Yeah, it's weird isn't it?? And it's especially weird trying to explain that I have NO family.....none!! It makes me uncomfortable, really.....

Tell them your situation and if theres an alternative solution for a reference.. very strange anyway.. I'll write one for you.. We are sisters after all!! :)

Just get a close friend to write one - instead of family. How weird anyway, a family reference?!?!?! Strange.

You don't know how/where to seek out old co-workers for more references?

Don't give them the names of your cats.

Just putting that out there. You don't like it, just send it back.

So they WANT a reference from a family member, or are they disqualifying one of your references BECAUSE it was a family member?

Disqualifying a family member's reference is common.

References in general are *huge* today. Employers really need them.

The only reason I could think of that someone would want a family member reference would be for a job in a religious or family-oriented job (i.e. Christian camp councilor, family relations counciling, etc. etc.)

LOL...well I know that banks ask for family references so they can call your mom's house or whoever you list to embarass you if you are late...lol. They won't come right out and say you owe money. They will just say it is a "personal matter"...lol.

Now as for hiring employees, I guess it is for emergency purposes or a subtle way of asking if you are the daughter of some rich, important person in the city. They will hire you then. Aren't I a cynic today? LOL.

I've never been asked for a family reference - actually they usually prefer a non-family member because a family member will usualy give a gushing review (or a flaming review...) instead of an objective one. Just for job pursuit purposes I'd put together a list of 3 people you have worked w/ in the past (doesn't have to be the most recent job) or people who you respect (and know will give you a good reference...!) So you'll have the list, their names, their titles, their address / contact info and also have asked them directly if they will be ref for you so they will not be suprised if someoen comes out of the woodwork to ask them questions about you.

i might stay unemployed permanantly. this is NICE.

i got a massage today. gonna go eat my fluffernutter sandwhich outside and read.

Use your friends, especially if it supposed to be from a company you used to work for. Just make sure they know the story in advance of who they are supposed to be.

References are easy to get by.

They just want your nearest relative in case you attempt to leave the "family" in the future...employment is forever.

Are they planning on contacting the Family member? And for what reason? I'd want to know. And what was not acceptable about the references you submitted?

That is what I did - actually I provided 4 references --> someone I worked in the office with + 3 other people I worked with, but not IN my office.....

They wanted a supervisor - one of whom actually died & the other got fired..... so I can't provide a supervisor.....

I gave her 2 more people I worked in the office with.....

I STILL don't get the family reference....and I don't know what was wrong with the original 4 people.....it's just weird....

I've had the same employer since 1992.....

And they didn't necessarily NEED a supervisor - just people I work with....and I worked with the original 4 people anyway.....

hehehe...just give em my number. I will tell em that I supervised you and you were the best employee that I ever had, that you made the company millions, and that I want you back on my team. I'll tell them to tell you to call me if they don't hire you...lol. I can lay it on thick.
