Red Light Cameras

Lumberg

New member
Ok so what's the argument against them other than they are sneaky, in other words an invarion into the privacy of individuals? Or that they are purely for revenue?

So apparently they are getting rid of RL cameras in Virginia.

If the goal of red light cameras is TRULY to make people drive more safely, there should be large, unmistakable signs at the intersections where cameras are mounted warning motorists not to run the light. and there should be a LOT more of them.

We have them around here now...... just recently installed in a lot of places...

The main bitch about them here is that if you stop for the light you'll get rear-ended..... but the purpose of the yellow is to stop & if you are a safe driver you're at a distance far enough back that you can stop in time.... The yellow isn't to speed up to get thru the intersection --> all this was in several letters to the editor lately.

I got busted going thru one last year & the $75 ticket is a big OUCH! Needless to say, I stop for the yellow now.....

Luckily tickets from automated systems can't lead to point son your license, which is a small blessing.

From the few I've seen around here, they have installed a sign alerting people that a camera is in operation.

I have no problem with them. If you run a red light, you should be fined heavily. I see people run reds every single day and it drives me nuts.

Red light running is getting high profile attention round here.

Probably because 2 of the top 5 deadliest roads in the US are in the Greater Orlando area..

I drive one of them every day and people running red lights or racing to beat one
is the top reason people get hit either in cars or pedestrians..

As for getting rid of them, mostly its not so much privacy concerns, but the fact that there is a zero tolerence to it nailing you vs a cops judgement etc..

Also some have been found to be a bit quick on the trigger so to speak

I thought they were fairly well calibrated. Also I heard that if you go to try to contest one, if you try to say well the thing turns too quick they know exactly how long it takes to go from yellow to red and they can tell exactly how far into the intersection you are, and tell how fast you were going and shit.

75$ ??!?!?!!? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

The fine for a red light camera violation in San Diego is 350 DOLLARS!!!!

HUGE invasion of privacy ... not to mention the company that makes them gets 75 dollars for each ticket... one company was caught placing the sensors too far back so people got tickets for making the light but not wuite enough.. (they were running late yellows)

Most traffic laws have NOTHING to do with safety.. and EVERYTHING to do with revenue collection.. any honest cop (ya good luck there) will even tell you that.

In San Diego.. some of the red light camers have yellows taht are so short no common vehicle could slow from the speed limit to a stop in the time they change.

GRRR I FUCKING HATE THOSE CAMERAS

I don't necessarily have a problem with red light cameras. The potential problem is that the philosophical underpinnings of the ideas of traffic control are changing.

When traffic lights were created, they were created to allow for the increased flow of traffic in an orderly manner. It was not about law enforcement.

Since then, law enforcement has gravitated to the highest revenue producing activites: traffic stops, asset seizures, and the like.

The installation of red light cameras is not about "safety" anymore than the war on drugs is about protecting the children. It is about increasing revenues and the ever increasing encroachment of law enforcement, nothing more.

Our pendulum has swung from liberty toward security and I hope it swings back.

Why is a redlight camera an invasion of privacy? You're driving in public.

I don't care. I slow down and stop and if I get re-ended I'm so going to own someones ass.

I'm joking i haven't gotten a ticket.. i don't run red's.. my car is new.. and don't intend on havin it smashed or hurting someone :rose:

The law CANNOT take pictures of the inside of your car. PERIOD.. even for an infraction. Its an invasion of privacy, period.

and Matt

" I hope it swings back."

Instead of hoping lets hope someone with your resources will actually "DO" instead of just hope.

I agree that it is all about revenue. All traffic/parking violations are. At the same time, people behaving in a dangerous manner need to be slapped occasionally.

Yes.. Most all of them work very well.. Same with Toll runner cameras

But it only takes one F'ed up camera or any technology really, to cause doubt and for the knee jerking politicians to pull them all ..

Bottom line IMO as to the cause of traffic accidents generally ..

*Lack of Attention or concern for fellow vehicles around you.

*Aggresssive driving Outside the bounds of either the drivers Skill/vehicles capability and or the conditions on the road..

I agree with Smurf and MTS..
Don't run a traffic control device and you won't have any problems with this situation.

So, instead of $ penalties to make an impact on people that they should follow traffic control devices for the good of all to get where you want to as quickly as possible, we should do what ?

Ask really really really nice ?
Take away the priviledge of driving for infractions ?
Allow anarchy to rein free on the roadways ?

Instead of saying ticketing is just a revenue generator and not really a means
to stress safety and efficiency, give us some suggestions to attain the end goal of traffic control and safety.

Also part of the issue is poor understanding of the laws in effect
that drivers should be compliant with. In Fla I am glad they are going
to a graduated system of licensing to allow the 16 year olds to slowly
get skilled in driving vs just tossing them out there to get killed..

I disagree. I think that many of the politicians who support red light cameras really do want to increase safety. And some just want the money, but they come together to create the cameras.

The reason why the companies that make the cameras get $$ is because the government doesn't have to pay for it.

I still think automated traffic enforcement devices should be allowed, but only when clearly marked. I think this solves the problem of it being for money; if they are clearly marked then it's obviously to get people to slow down, not to "catch" people and make money. If you fail to pay attention to the signs AND break a law, you get what's coming. Don't like being monitored by big brother? Take a different route, or don't drive. Don't like the fact that you have to go out of your way or hitch a ride? MOVE.

You could move in next to Wodin and take a horse and buggy to town
for feed and kerosene.

You forgot alcohol. Ya know, that little thing. :)

Accidents in Orlando are largely due to the extremely high population of out of towners, old people, and international tourists.

Many of these groups cause accidents indirectly with incompetence or unfamiliarity and they are not even reported, because they were not directly involved.

No company should ever be able to profit from the mechanics of enforcing laws. Imagine glock getting paid by the bullet. :(

It is one thing to sell products to the government, quite another to profit from their implementation.

You can't have 100% automatic enforcement of any law. It's unamerican.

And what happens at 3:00 AM, when there's no traffic, you're the only car on the road, and you've been waiting five minutes for the light to change?

With the cameras here, I don't see how it's an invasion of privacy.....the camera takes the pic of the back of your car -- 1) the plate only 2) the car at the light & 3) the car in the middle of the intersection -- all from behind. So, to me, that's not an invasion of privacy.....

It's my understanding, here at least, that most pics are reviewed by an officer before being issued (that's why they come over 1 month afterwards) to determine if they are warranted....

Anytime there is extreme potential for government abuse.. ESPECIALLY when the manufacturers are getting paid PER TICKET the device should be out of the question.

You all fail to notcie the local communities spend NO MONEY or TIME on fixing traffic.. little things like getting rid of some of the lEFT FUCKIN G TURN ARROWS.. and let people yield to turn left instead of watiing 5 FUCKING minutes at every god damn light to turn left because their is a red arrow.

Or TIMING lights on main streets to increase traffic flow.

They wonder why people run lights.. drive around San Diego for 20 minutes and see how far you get.. see how many times 300 cars get stopped on a main street, backingup traffic for miles because some cross street at a church has one car pull up to it... only to have the same thing happen at the next light 300 feet down the road.

One interection at a business park gets back up EVERY FUCKING day for 30 minutes because they put a light at a fucking TACO BELL.

and you wonder why people run red lights.

This is about revenue.. and if any of you actually PAID attention to traffic patters instead of doing your FUCKING NAILS or TALKING ION YOUR FUCKING CEL PHONES you might notice WHY traffic is fucked up and see that a freaction of the money spent on camers COULD have been spent on intelligent lighting saving thousand of peole time and money.

My god some of you are sheep.

Oh and I rarely drive anywhere but the way I walk up to the gym is a main road out of the city and at rush hour it's hilarious...... This city is so messed up -- at 5pm, all the lights going out of the city should be on a cycle to increase the maximum flow of traffic & that doesn't happen but should....

However, the turn signal arrows (around here) are very useful, cuz as a pedestrian I'd never get across the street otherwise...

Actually Matt, that is what everyone thought including me, that the high numbers were due to lost tourists. And yes, partly that is driving the numbers higher than other areas. And it was that way a few years ago.
Those tourist areas (I-4 Disney/International drive) have accidents true but mostly they are low speed ones with minimal injuries/deaths.

The strange thing is that the 2 highest accident and fatality roads are not in tourist frequented areas. They are many miles away from and not a link to any major tourist destination and the deaths and accidents are almost entirely locals.

SR 50 / COLONIAL Drive both east and west ends are the 2 roads I am referring to, like that means anything to any else.

My god some of you are sheep.

Good points, and no I am not a sheep or a lemming.

My question is simple:

Are these RED LIGHT cameras, or YELLOW LIGHT cameras?

I hate the fear of going to an intersection, seeing it turn yellow -- then having to make that split second decision on whether i can _safely_ come to a complete stop (and risk bashing the guy behind me), or proceed through the intersection.

Where i then face the inherent threat that the light might turn red while i'm _in_ the intersection (increased odds if you're actually DOING the speed limit) and thereby get stuck with a ridiculous fine.

And all those nazi cities that decrease yellow light times don't help either.

The real comedy is -- a mere 1 second extra delay between a red light and the turning of the opposing direction's green light can have the same impact in reducing red-light collissions.

Assuming the definition of "running red lights" is the 95% of cars that we see run through the intersection at the last second trying to make it.

But of course that 1 second delay won't increase revenues. Might as well pick the option that'll fill up the city coffers for higher salaries for all.

That big fat white line at the intersection is the limit.. Cross that after the light turns red and you are in violation generally. Some Counties/Cities also extend the center or lane marker solid from the intersection out 50 ft or so to give you a guide as to whether you can safely stop when you see the yellow.

Many people know there is a delay and so they make the run knowing
the opposing cars have a second before they get green..

Y-Lifter.. it amazing how naive you're being about this.. Its already been abused and over 400,000 dollars returned to taxpayers in San Diego.

Teh company that installed the cameras makes 75 dollars per ticket.. so they moved the sensor back further and people got tickets for running yellow lights... and as much as people bitched guess what.. they judge said here is a picture.. you're gyuilty

UNTIL

Some senator guy got busted and knew he didnt run the light.. had it investigated and the city had to overturn EVERY conviction.

SO fuckign sad that ALL these people plead their case and WERE RIGHT..a nd still got fuckled.. so some ignorant guy like you who just says "dont run a red light" can convict them in your mind... making every abuse of the government okay. And it takes a fuckign senator to get caught before ANYTHING is done.

you are the definition of sheep and the sad thing in every community trhere are so many like you.

They have set UNREASONABLE traffic laws which greatly increase traffic time, cost money and are nearly impossible to enforce. So their answer is to install camers insted of fixing the root of the problem and fixing traffic flow.. and for every Y-Lifter out there it only makes it ten times worse because YOU justify their actions..

You're just like one of those hosuiewives or senior citizens who see's something in the newsppaer or 8Pm news and AUTOMATICALLY assumes its true.

Y-Lifter if you're so god damn conviced.. drive your ass down to anintersection and time the yellow..

Now go get in your car and see if yuo car could come to a complete stop from the speed liomit in the time it takes to go from yellow to red.

..its rhetorical.. ou will fail.. most of thsoe lights are 2 seonds.. not to manyvehicles an go from45 miles per hour to 0 mph in 2 seconds without seriously endangerign the lives of everyone behind them..

and guess what 1 type of accident has GREATLY increased in San Diego county because of these fucking lights.

People getting rear ended at intersections because some guy doent weant a 400 dollar ticket!

Wake the fuck up.

Did I say photo enforcement was the only way to go ?

sorry.. I was pissed when I wrote it. Its a huge issue in San Diego and a lot of people are getting screwed downhere because of it.

As far as emotional.. I think you would be too if you got a 400 dollar ticket for something you didnt do.

in NYC, they send u 2 or 3 notices, then give up. I guess the conviction rate if you fight it in traffic court is low so they dont bother.

the yellow lights in fairfax county where there are RL cameras are alot quicker than a normal yellow light...thus causing plenty of people slamming their brakes at the sight of a yellow light....should be freaking normal time from yellow to red like the other non RL cameras.....in Loudoun County, they are the same duration of time as other non RL cameras.....fairfax just plain sucks balls

only been nailed once, i would like to get a paint ball gun and late at night shoot at the lens and all the photo camera will capture is red paint......

What baby? This issue is 100% bathwater.

they freak th shit outta me, but generally even if its 'just' turned to a red i see people get away with it and not get flashed.

It bugs me in some area's though, even when the fucking thing is red people wanna run them, depending on the area its dangerous....generally if i think its unsafe to stop for a red I wont but that happens a lot more when the bitch behind you is speeding up to make the change. and if i get hit i still probably get some change in my insurance premiums either way

not an invasion of privacy as you have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public.

Privacy? That's a red herring, this issue isn't about privacy at all.

Sometimes I drive a loaded stretch cargo van and there is simply no way I could get stopped before the middle of the intersection with some of these yellow lights that last for exactly one second.

Most people that run red lights do not do so because they couldn't stop safely. They do it because they saw the light was getting ready to change and they gunned it through because they were 'in a hurry'. Get real with all this nonsense people.

As for some of the comments about the timing of the lights etc.? Perfectly true and should be fixed. However, that will not stop 80% of the people that currently run red lights from doing it. They'll do it anyway. Is it a cash grab? Sure it is but it still serves a valuable purpose.

The Baby is the Traffic enforcements measures that are working at high accident
rate intersections. This is where these lights are normally placed.

The Bathwater is the issues you are mentioning as in short yellows, crooked officials and kickbacks etc that should be fixed by complaining, call action news or booting them out of office..
Have you done any of these things about this problem?

Learn what a "Stale Green light" is, and be prepared to stop when you see one.

And I still haven't heard any suggestions on how to better control traffic control devices which as we all know are 100% neccesary.

I know this first hand because when 3 hurricaines hit us last summer, I had to drive across town several times on 3 seperate occasions with most of the signals out for days.

Dealing with that 4 way stop nonsense at major intersections and 1/2 the drivers not comprehending or caring about it sucked Sasquatch Nuts.

Is there any evidence that red light cameras are effective at calming traffic? Seems to me that, by definition, all they can do is punish offenders.

These dangerous intersections that you complain about are not caused by inadequate enforcement, they are caused by inadequate engineering. Throwing stepped-up enforcement at the problem solves nothing, it's just another failed attempt at behavior modification. The solution is to analyze and re-engineer the intersections in question, so that they can adequately handle the demands of the traffic volume.

I agree but you would still have all kinds of people running lights. It seems to be their nature that they can't wait for 60 seconds at a light so they try and gun it through. The solution to the traffic problem is certainly not red light cameras but IMO they are still a necessity even if traffic volume is no longer an issue.

Supposedly accidents overall are down in VA since installation, but no hard correlation.

Like I said if there were a sign, you'd be warning people ahead of time, rather than punishing them afterwards; the gov't needs to put its money where its mouth is and act to DETER the activity, not line their pockets.

60 seconds Bluepeter??? BWHAHAHHAHAHAHHAAH

To get from my Condo complex to the highwway is approx 1.2 miles. There are 4 traffic lights.

The heaviest traffic flow goes down my street through those lights straight to the highway. None of them are times with each other.. So if you hit one red.. you hiot all red.. if you hit one green.. you hit the other three red.

In three years of living here.. I have made those lights a total of three times.

the lights run red to hundreds of cars.. most of the time.. so one car on a side street can go.. and their light is timed just as long.

Peopel got so frustrated they started running the light.. so instead of the city fixing the lights .. they shorten the yellow and install a camera.

On a good day it takes me TEN MINUTES to go 1.2 miles and get on the highway.. and BTW.. I leave for work at 5:45 AM..

Dont EVER wonder why people dont trust red light cameras, traffic engineers or local governments.. the ONLY purpose of those camers is revenue.. "saftey" is just an excuse they use to convice the dumbfucks..

and BTW thew INSIDE OF YOUR CAR you have eevry right to expect privacy.. the prrof being that if a cop wants to search it... he needs a warrant.. and guess what that camera takes a picture of ALONG with your plate.. ... the inside of your car.

That's great man. I'm not disagreeing with your premise that a serious change needs to be made in the engineering of traffic flow. Regardless, most people that run red lights do so because they are in a rush and gun it through to save a little time. I see it every day and I've seen several accidents as a result. Every time I see it I hope that the fucker just got his picture taken and gets a letter with a hefty fine.

Wash DC made $124 million from their red light cameras last year..and adding more...just came out today they had a fiscal surplus of $395 million.. hmmmmmm wonder why ?

agree that red light running is dangerous and people get tboned from it....but don't quicken the yellow light...heck there should be a 1.5 sec delay for the opp side of traffic before it turns green....sure that'll solve some of the tboning

The cameras are set to be tripped if you enter the intersection on red, not if you are already in it. The intersection starts the line drawn from the straight part of the sidewalk to the other side.

So, if you or a part of you is already in the intersection when the light turns red you are safe.

Every place that has had it reported and proven that the camera enforced intersection's yellow lights were off/shorter from the others in the area have had them put back from my News experience.

A 1.5 second delay just means more people can run thru the intersection after red before getting Tboned :)

.

For those of you who think that 100% enforced automatic compliance is a good idea, how would you feel if every item of mail was inspected? After all, if you're doing nothing wrong, if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about.
