Red bumps from shaving

Anyone out there have a problem with those damn red bumps that show up a day after shaving? What can you do to prevent them? I usually shave my face about three times a week and my pubes about once a week. I use lots of shave gel and aftershave lotion. Those bumps always show up on my neck and pubic area about a day later.

Any advise is much appreciated!

for the bikini area i always use hydrocorisone .5% ointment. They sell a bikini Zone cream for 4x the price that is the same exact ingredients.

Oh how I wish there was an answer. There are a few things you can do to combat them but not totally stop them. First off I started using a Bic single blade disposable which helped a bit not totally but much better than a mach 3. Second, Get a pin and flick the ingrown hair out. Do that before you shave and give the bump a little time to go down before you run the razor over it. Shave with the grain. Thats what i do. doesnt totally stop it but kinda helps

Is it O.K. to use on the body other than the face?
Should be Ok,never used on other areas personaly but because it has salactic acid in it I would keep it away from sensitive skin areas like the arm pits

Dio you shave every 3 days becasue you don't need to in between or is that your growth pattern?
I grow a jungle in 3 days and like one post said, it's about the blade, particularly ingrown hair.
I also use DMAE cream or Retinol cream.
I've used Clinique which was okay but I don't shave on the week-ends and it gets to thick and my growth was like a roach and after time became used to Clinique and then the burn would show up.
So I shave and use DMAE or Retinol cream regardless. I also use it at night to keep things right.
Vitamin K cream works too.

yea I only have to shave every other day at the most cause my beard grows pretty slow. I've heard that if you shave either the face or pubic area (or any area I guess) every day that eventually the skin will get use to the activity and the bumps will go away or quit showing up.
Anyone here ever tried this? I have and it didn't seem to help.

If your hair is coarse, you should make sure that the areas you are going to shave are wet for at least 5 minutes (best to shave in the shower) before you apply your shave cream/gel. Use a single blade disposable razor and shave with the grain of your hair, not against. In between shaves, try using a Buff-puf in a circular pattern on the shaved skin when you wash. This will help stimulate the hair folicles and helps prevent ingrown hairs.
I've dealt with ingrown hairs for years and found this method to be most effective. Good luck and I hope you find what works for you!

Thanks for the info angelchik but what are Buff-puf's? I'll have to try shaving in the shower, never tried that!

I think they are those scratchy bath-type things that women use with liquid soap.

That's exactly what they are. You can find them in the face cleansing isle at any drug store, Wal-mart, etc. Buff-puf is the brand name. :)

What causes the most problem is shaving against the grain. This can be a problem if the hair grows in a swirl pattern. but if not you should shave with the grain. In my case I have to shave down on my face and up on my neck.

Some hair grows straight up out of of the skin. Some hair grows at different angles out of the skin this is the hair that causes the problem. shaving against the grain cases the hair to slide under the 1st layer of skin and it gets trapped.
