Recommendatons for lifting shoes?

I keep reading about the Converse Chuck Taylors and was wondering if there are any other brands that might be just as functional?

For the past 2 years I have been lifting with running shoes (I came into this hobby with a strong running background) and they are really inhibiting my form on squats. This needs to change, so any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

If you're doing Oly squats, get Olympic shoes. For ~$150 you can get a pair of adidas lifting shoes, but the Chinese ones sold by Glenn Pendlay are supposedly excellent as well for a little more than half the price.

Chuck Taylors are a good choice for power squats, and you might want to pick them up even if you're Oly squatting as a general gym shoe since they'd probably be more stable for deadlifts and rows (and standing presses, although some use the Olympic shoes mentioned above for these).

Thanks for the reply.

I am doing Olympic squats (ass to ground, right?), but am also looking for a general gym shoe. I know vanity should be the last of my concerns in the gym, but I am not that keen on the look of the Chuck Taylors.

Do you think the Adidas shoe you mentions above, or the Chinese/Pendlay ones would work for a general gym shoe as well?

You probably want something without an elevated heel as a general gym shoe.

Indoor soccer shoes have pretty flat soles without much cushioning to make them unstable and look a lot better than Chucks.

regular gym shoe: Puma Speed Cats ... damn comfortable, flat, no bounce to them.
