Recent negative info about CLA?

Did anyone see a post here or somewhere else talking about possible negatives with high CLA consumption?

I'm also looking for something regarding anti-oxidants (ALA) all having the possibility of becoming oxidants?

Thanks!

CLA contains 2 isomers...analogous to ALA that contained 2 isomers -S and -R

One of the CLA isomers acts like the -R version of ALA(Just an analogy), while the other acts like the -S version(Again just an analogy).

So in fact, one of the CLA isomers works against the other, but the net result is a positive one. However, if a company were able to isolate the "good" CLA isomer, CLA supplementation would be enhanced by at least 3-4 fold, because no bad CLA isomer would be found in the oil(CLA is an oil), and fight against the "good" CLA isomer.

You'll probably see this "good" CLA isomer hit the supplement stores in the nest 4 months or so.

Fonz:

how much CLA do you take??, I know in a previous post you said it gave you G.I. problems. I tried the high dose you mentioned in your old post and it gave me the shits real bad!!! I cut the dose but I would like a balk park figure of what the minimum effective dose would be??

Thanks

I don't use CLA anymore. Not cost-effective at the required high dosages...and the shits also aren't a plus either.

O.k,

but if you are not using CLA, did you replace it with anything?? or is it still the standard stack of R-ALA, GT, ALCAR & GLA?? - which might I add is a kick-ass supplement stack for anyone reading this post that wants to cut bodyfat!

Thanks for the help!

Until, they sell the version of CLA that is the isolated version of the good component, they aren't getting any of my money. I read about the "good" component of CLA in Muscular Development about a year ago. The supplement companies have been riping everyone off since that time, as they haven't put out the effective version, yet.

CLA still works.....you just need a high enough dose...like 25g/day. But the runs are the worst at that dosage. Hopefully, the new isomer won't have the diarrhea problem(As it will also be a fat)

have yet to see it available, other than in research quantities. Though expect that someone will start producing it (affordably).

along the supplement front there are a host of new compounds that will be probably out in the next months/year that will be "better bets".. though a single isomer CLA will probably be among them (just not the best among them)

I think these are the concerns I had originally seen:

1) CLA is a trans-fatty acid

2) CLA at high doses competes with EFAs and crowds them and their derivatives out of enzyme spaces

What kind of negative effects are suspected anyway? I got the impression that it wasn't worth the money regardless just because of the large doses that are needed.

Fonz, are you sure about the two isomers counteracting each other? I'm not questioning you, it's just pretty rare to have one form do the opposite of the other (usually one works, and one either dosen't work, or dosen't work well). I believe naproxen is a notable exception.
