OK so I have been reading in some nutritionists report that raw egg whites do nothing for us as we get nothing from them unless they are cooked

does anyone have any answers on this as I have been drinking raw egg whites as part of my diet for a couple of years now and if this means ive been gettin no protein out of this im gonna be pissed...

Oh and is it bad to be drinking raw egg whites at say 8 - 10 per day

Anyone have any comments???

Eh I don't think so. If you get them pre-pasteurized its almost impossible to get any sickness. Dont crack open an egg, buy the containers of egg whites.

In on eend and out the other basically means go straight through the body - the body does not utilize any of the whites (uncooked)

Egg whites pre-prepared are pre-prepared for frying, poaching or as scrambled. Not to eat raw

Peace :chomp:

After a session I would eat 6 raw eggs. 3 whole and three with just the whites. They are digested ,as if they went straight you, you would feel it in the toilet right. People ive talked to say they are easily digested. and eggs are the best source of protein.

Well see they don't go in one end and out the other. They do work. They are pasteurized which is basically heating the product untill any Salmonella and Eschera Coli are killed but the product is not cooked. I think people would have realized this before they started drinking raw egg whites years ago.

Also, some cooking denatures the protein. I dont see how it can be good to cook any protein except for health reasons. Most protein doesn't benefit from being cooked. So your saying by not cooking I'm NOT getting protein? Thats wrong. Otherwise the label would read differently.

Keep in mind cooking too much isnt good for the protein.

Also found this quote:

"The simple solution is to cook the egg whites as this completely deactivates the avidin. The problem is that it also completely deactivates nearly every other protein in the egg white. While you will still obtain nutritional benefits from consuming cooked egg whites, from a nutritional perspective it would seem far better to consume them uncooked."

people used to eat raw eggs all the time, but you can get salmonella.
That is why most don't do it.

I have also read that unless you cook them you don't get the nutritional benefit, but I don't have any hard evidence of this to back it up.

I agree there yes

Just cook them

No benefit to eat them raw

The "denatures the protein" is BS when you're talking about applied nutrition

At one stage I used to eat them raw on a daily basis, however my stomach went through a series of bloatedness and I couldn't tolerate it after awhile (not to mentioned how repulsive it tasted).
I would much prefer to have them lightly cooked (despite some protein being destroyed). In any case, I rely on getting protein of my protein powder & meat. (and I assumed that's how ya'll get it too)

Egg protein (albumin) digestion is way better when cooked, no doubt. you do digest sum when Raw but not way as much!

Well right now for me its either raw or in a microwave because I'm in college. Honestly, they taste better raw.

Cooked protein goes through folding and becomes more bioavailable. Looking at a loss of at least 30% when uncooked.Egg white is albumin and is 'faster' than caesin and slower than whey.

But if you choose to drink'em raw, it's safe because they are pastuerized....well, the egg whites in cartons are.

I've been reading that there is Avidin in raw egg whites, and unless you cook them, Avidin keeps your body from digesting the protein. You must cook them to neutralize the Avidin, and the possible threat of salmonella. I think only one in every 30,000 eggs contains the bacteria salmonella, and while this is pretty low, it is still possible. It is more dangerous for very ill, or elderly people, or pregnant women.

I dont really understand the whole egg white thing. Why not eat the egg yolk also? The egg yolk is the major source of the eggs vitamins, minerals, fat, and about half of the eggs protien.

The yolk also usually has around 270 mg of Cholesterol in one.

Thats almost 70% of your daily value of cholesterol.

Plus the yolk is high in saturated fat.

It gives some an upset stomach also because it is so rich.

Well I have never bought the ones in a carton always cracked open the egg and poured the white in to a glass I have done this for quite a few years and has never harmed me at all I usually do this in the morning as a way of gettin a few extra proteins in the morn and cannot stomach much when I first get up so I usually just add them to my protein shake.

For all the do`s and dont`s for now im gonna keep douing it and as for food poisoning ect I dont even remember having an upset stomach throughout my whole life I mean c`mon people have been doing this for years so I will carry on but as for the yolks F**K that shit...:RADAR

As far as food poisoning goes, out of 69billion eggs, only 2.9 million will have that bacteria. So your chances of ever getting salmonella are slim to none. But don't think you can't get it.

I just add 7 egg whites/1 yolk into a bowl, wack in microwave = scrambled egg...cook my oats as normal then add all together and mix.

I have fallen in love with this and look foward to it every morning.... :p

The egg yolk contains good cholesterol or HDL. HDL removes bad cholesterol from the bloodsteam. The yolk is by far the most nutritious part of the egg.

Then why does it say egg whites are heart healthy and normal eggs arent?

Too much cholesterol isnt good and thats a fact. I was saying it was a lot of cholesterol overall.

Read the post before you jump to conclusions.

Im not jumping to any conclusions, but when you posted the facts on cholesterol, you made it look like that was a bad thing. You didnt talk about the difference between good and bad cholesterol. I felt it necessary to point that out. Im just saying the egg yolk isnt bad for you. It does much more good than bad. People that think the yolk is bad for you have old information. There have been lots of recent studies that show how beneficial the yolk is. You can eat it or not, makes no difference to me.

Yes there are good cholesterols.

However, I feel egg whites are better for you.

The yolk has little saturated fat, and the cholesterol issue is blown out of proportion. If you eat alot of cholesterol in the diet your liver will produce less, and if you eat to little it will pump out more. Besides cholesterol is essential to hormone production, you know this. For us weight pounders it is not that smart to obsess over choplesterol intake. If you are truely concerned cut down sat and trans fat, they will kick up that cholesterol disregarding the livers controls.

Something for you to consider if you are going to consume raw egg whites and if you are not concerned with the health dangers (salmonella, e.coli) which are considerably higher in the UK due to the fact that the vast majority of store bought eggs are not refrigerated:

Advin, as has been mentioned, present in raw egg whites, prevents the uptake of Vitamin H (Biotin). Biotin is essential for the release of food energy and protein metabolism ... two things which a bodybuilder depends upon. It is also important in reducing a zinc deficiency.

A zinc deficiency can lead to an enlarged liver and spleen, anorexia, protein malnutrition, loss of hair, iron deficiency (anemia), male reproductive disorders and impaired wound healing.

If you are prepaired to accept all the health concerns and domino effects of eating raw egg whites then carry on but I, personally, don't see any benefits.

It's not like I like doing it. It's either that or the microwave. Microwaved eggs are made of foam. I'm in college. This summer I will never eat them raw, I will cook them.

Don't feel pressured to eat raw anything. If you are not comfortable eating it don't.

Personally I have always mixed raw eggs with my protein drinks. This comes to about 6 raw eggs every day for years.

In addition to raw eggs I love to eat sushi. I try to binge on sushi at least once a month. Steak Tartar is another favorite.

If you are that scared of E-coli don't eat in any restaurant.

There are reasons why you can eat raw steak, and not eat raw ground beef (why hamburgers must be cooked so there is no pink and a chance of E coli).

Yep. Always completely cook ground beef!
