I read the post about making the decision to rat out a source and of course, everyone says the never would, but a lot do. Its important to understand why people roll on sources.
Nobody sitting here talking to their "friends" would ever consider ratting out someone who had put themselves out there for you. Everyone agrees that is a fucked up thing to do and nobody would ever do so. But they do.
People rat out their source when they are caught by suprise, ie search warrant and 20 cops and guns in your apt. Or they get scared by listening to the cops threaten them with their pentalty if they dont cooperate, or make promises or threats. Remember this: Cops can do nothing about your charges, prosecution, or make it easier on you if you cooperate. The DA makes those decisions. All the cops do is make the arrest, try to get as much evidence and incriminating statements as possible, then take you to jail. Its in the DAs hands after that.
When you have a gun at your head, laying face down with cops ransacking your place, you cannot think straight. All you want is for it to be over as fast as possible. The police know that, and they are trained to ask you fast direct questions which will incriminate you - IF YOU ANSWER. Thats why you never speak to the police without consulting an attorney. Once you are "busted" there is nothing you can say that will benefit you in any way. Your attorney can provide a much better explanation of how that weed, that you didnt even know about, got in your car than you can on the ground pissing yourself.
I'd say 90% of the outcome of an arrest depends on what the suspect does or says at the initial confrontation with law enforcement. If they find weed in your car and you come up with a bullshit explanation, or worse, confession, the DA has alot of ammo against you. If you keep your trap shut all the have is the bag of weed.
Time is the strongest asset when it comes down to confessing or ratting out someone. I know Army intelligent officers who say the best way to get someone to confess or rat out info is to ask their friend. Then when he doesnt cooperate, throw him out the bay of the airplane. Then ask the 2nd guy.
Rolling over on someone is the most fucked up, bitch thing you can do. Anyone who does is worthless. But you may do it too if you cant think straight.
You need to know why people do so and what to expect when, god forbid, the day comes, why you dont.
Get educated about the CJ system, the Constitution was written to protect individuals from the governemnt. Know your rights and never waive them.
The golden rules are never speak with police before consulting an attorney, never consent to a search, and always be respectufl of police offiers. They have a dangerous job and put themselves at risk to protect people for very little pay.
They dont make the rules, but they are sworn to enforce them.
