I am not a backpacking expert or anything but I have packed into the wilderness area's to hunt in the fall, and have learned a little bit.
I avoid taking anything in cans / tins that I can. I take freeze dried food that only needs boiling water, granola bars, trail mix, jerky, tuna in those flat envelope bags, and dried friut.
I take a tiny stove and mess kit for boiling water. Trash is minimal as I burn the packages and when it's time to move on I pick out the foil that doesn't burn. This method keeps the wilderness clean but also burns the food smell up so we don't attract bears. If you can, vacuum seal the trail mix, jerky, dried friut, ect. into portions. That way you consume it and can get the trash out of your pack.

Whatever you do don't sleep with your food in the tent or bivi. Hang your pack & food up to keep the critters out of it. Mice will eat through foil, I know. :worried:

I think personally a water purifying filter is way better to use than tabs, and worth the extra weight, but I take tabs along just in case.

any reason you are anti tin?

Mostly because of bears. Tin won't burn so there's always some food smell left in the trash. Tins have to be packed out, and take up more room than freeze dried. I know some people will bury tins but they just get dug back up. Bears, coyotes, and now wolves are common enough where I've been hunting that it's easier to avoid problems by keeping trash and food smells to the absolute minimum.

Some sort of protein/energy/granola bars would be a good idea. -Lightweight and good source of energy.
