Rant about the NHL

#1 If I see one more defenceman wave his stick @ a guy with the puck in an attempt to "check" him, I'm gonna go off.

#2 Proof once again that the All Star Game is a freakin' joke; Kipper and Nabokov not on the all-star team? Once again it's a popularity contest. It gets worse every year.

#3 The Caps and Wings will probably win their "divisions" this year. You call those divisions?

#4 These commentators are PAINFUL to listen to. Don't know his name but the play by play guy on VS. is so freakin' boring that I turn the sound off on the TV. On NBC Pierre Mc Guire is a almost as hard to listen to. And I thought Chico Resch was bad.

#5 I love Wayne Gretzky as much as anyone, but he is NOT a coach. The "I'm-going-behind-the-bench for-PR's-sake" experiment should've eneded a long time ago.

#6 Bettman still needs to be impeached.

Feel free to add to this list, and if you don't like the NHL that's your opinion, no need to bash.....

1. Carrying the stick above the height of the shoulders is a penalty. Give it to them.
2. True.
3. True
4. CBC is the shiznizz.
5. So painfully true.
6. True.

1-it happens. guys get lazy and others are just too quick to get the body on them. 82 games is a long season. Too long.
2-It's just an allstar game not a real hockey game. Only football's allstar game is worse. With fan voting no question, it's a popularity contest. Kiprusoff had a lousy start but deserves to be there.
3-Wings would lead their division regardless. Caps aren't best in east but deserve to lead their division.
4-I don't get VS but I have heard commentators (probably highlights) and they sounded pretty good.
McGuire can be annoying trying to sell game to US market but very knowledgable. I like him.
5-Prolly right but I think he loves the game and closest he can get to same adrenalin rush without actually playing.
6-I'd rather have a true hockey guy as commissioner but he also does what he has to as owners are his boss.

Only real problem I have is little guys dishing cheap shots and then hiding behind linesman.

sme years are good, some aren't. Injuries took them right out of any playoff contention. We did get to see the new kids play, this Neal kid and others, pretty good players. But Modano will be 37, Zubov, Sydor, the game has changed, it's young speedsters now.
I see big changes coming, haven't kept up with the press releases, but they will have to do something drastic imo.

We can solve my #'s 4-5 by making Gretzky the commish!!!

TTCRW1 or whatever the tech geeks put when they think that a good answer...

lots of talk in the news about banning fighting with the kid that was killed recently.
Part of the game but it has to be spontaneous, in the heat of the action. Not two guys discussing whether or not the other will fight.

I coach baseball, haven't gotten the hang of the skates. I tried to skate when we had parents vs. kids, I didn't make it too far on the ice. LOL

I'm hell at yelling over the top of the glass though!

I'm a referee and I'd rather see a good fight then some of the stick work and other BS that goes on.

I thought you coached your son's hockey team as well. In any case, gotta love an enthusiastic hockey fan from Texas. Just stay on fan's side of the glass.

I'm president of our hockey association, have been for 4 years.

Random stuff, but.....

Don't allow timeouts to be called after you ice the puck, your supposed to have an advantage from their inability to get off the ice, yet in crunch times most coaches just call a timeout and the icing is insignificant

Allow a 2 min power play to be opted for instead of a penalty shot, this weekend in the pens game was a good example would rather have a 5v3 then a PS against henrik

Dont ever call diving/the other call at the same time, just the dive or just the call

More interconference games, the schedule needs work in my opinion

Only one time out per game, so that shouldn't make a difference.
Penalty shot is one of the most exciting plays in hockey (according to fans).
I agree, if it's a dive don't call the other.

i'm saying give htem an option of a 2 min PP or a PS.

Nobody would take the power play, the idea is to get as many of the other skaters off the ice as possible right? Penalty shot has them ALL off. 1-on-1 with the goalie gives you the best chance to score.

Especially when I was a goalie. I couldn't stop a basketball from going in the net.

Why the %@#$% are the Canadiens called the Habs?

It's time to introduce bigger nets. I'm not talking about radically altering the size of the nets, just a couple of inches taller, and a couple of inches wider...just enough so that some of the shots that currently ping the post or crossbar would now go in. The reason this makes sense, and is not a 'gimmick' to artificially boost offense, is that the goalies are so much bigger nowadays. All it would do is allow the real snipers in the game to see a tiny sliver of net when they're busting in on the goalie...and give them the opportunity to score with a perfect shot; as it stands now, when most goalies are at the edge of the crease and squared up, theres literally nothing but the five-hole to shoot at.

Don't believe me that the current net size is a relic from a bygone era? Check this out:

Average height of top five goalies drafted in 1980: 69.6 inches

Average height of top five goalies drafted in 2008: 74.6 inches

That's an average height difference of FIVE INCHES! Goalies are much bigger men now, wearing bigger equipment to boot. Making the net four inches taller and six inches wider would be just about right.

wow, that's some great trivia!

and Canucks Marc? what's up there....

Got this from Wikianswers. I'd never heard of Johnny Canuck though.

"A Canuck is a slang name for a Canadian. Just like Yankee in slang for an American.also it origanated from a canaidian boxer named johnny canuck who you can now find on Luangos mask"

For those complaining about Bettman, remember, he's just a puppet of the NHL owners. There's no doubt in my mind that if you pulled 10 hockey fans out of the cheap seats on any given night and gave them carte blanche to run the league, they'd make massive improvements.

Starting with:

1. Phoenix -> Winnipeg
2. Bolts or Panthers or Preds - > GTA (tough luck Sabres and Leafs, it's happening whether you like it or not)
3. Revamped playoff seeding system...division winners no longer guaranteed top 3 seeding.
4. Cancel fan voting for All-Star Game starters
5. Instigator rule dropped
6. Mandatory visors w/ 'grandfather clause' starting next season

#1-YES! Still have my Jets jersey
#2-Yes but do it this way=combine all the lame teams in markets where NO ONE gives a damn about hockey into one team. Bye bye Columbus, Phoenix, Nashville...
#3-Yes and make it top 6. Or 4.
#4-YESSSSSS!!! Might as well cancel the all start game all together it's a joke.

#6-Meh

1-An american Winnipeg fan? Bobby Hull fan?
2-I get that those cities are not now and will never be true hockey markets. Winnipeg, Hamilton and Quebec City are good options - People would go nuts here when Mtl-Quebec played. It's funny when CBC plays up Toronto-Montreal as a great rivalry.
3-Playoffs is the real hockey season. It's long, prolly too long but I wouldn't reduce teams just seeding like Cndhitman suggested.
4-I wouldn't miss it
5-Agreed
6-It'll happen but i'd leave it to players. More protection=less respect and more stick work.
