About 20 yrs. ago my dad's bar (an Irish pub in NY) burned down and he rebuilt it. He made the new place more upscale (pianist at night and different menu) completely non-smoking. He lost all of his old customers and the new business failed and he had to sell it. I think it may have succeeded today, but back then there was no way.

I smoke, but I agree with most non-smoking rules, like no smoking in the office, in malls, airplanes, places where the air gets recirculated. I wouldn't mind if the bars were non-smoking as long as there was an outside area or smoking only room like they have at the airport in Tampa. I have quit several times (the longest was when I was pregnant), but I have zero willpower to permanently kick the habbit. It really SUCKS.
