R-ALA and diabetes

Never Enough

New member
What's up guys? I know this is not anabolic related but I know there's alot of guys over here with alot of knowledge about this stuff. Anyway, I was wondering would r-ala be effective in treating someone with type-1 diabetes? I know I've heard people talk about hypoglycemia if not taken with sufficient carbs. I'm trying to help my fiance's mother, so any info you can provide would be appreciated. Thanks!

r-ala is being used in clinical trials in the US and in for many years in europe to treat type II diabetes. But as with any medical condition you fiance's mother should consult with her doctor before using r-ala.

Especially because she will probably need to lower or stop her insulin use.

I thought most type II Diabetics don't use insulin, but rather develop a resistance to the insulin they produce?

macrophage69alpha....thanks for your reply. She is consulting with a doctor. I just thought I'd do a little research on my own due to the fact that some docs are so programmed to only certain types of treatment for things that sometimes I feel they go at things with tunnel vision. She's currently not on any insulin yet.

Paulos...you are right about the type-II being insulin resistant and type-I being insulin dependent. Sorry I meant to say that she is type-I.

I did just find this article in Life Extension mag of march 96:
Prevention And Treatment Of Diabetes

There is solid evidence in both animals and humans that alpha lipoic acid can help to prevent and treat the pathologies of diabetes through its antioxidant and antiglycation effects. Type I (insulin dependent) diabetes results from destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas by immunlogic or inflammatory attack. One animal model for this type of diabetes is the non obese diabetic mouse, which has been specially bred to get diabetes. When the development of diabetes was accelerated in these mice by the administration of the drug cyclophosphamide, 60% of the mice developed full-fledged diabetes in 1-3 weeks, but if these mice were injected with alpha lipoic acid (10mg/kg) for 10 days before and 10 days after cyclophosphamide administration, only 30% of the mice developed diabetes.

really depends, quite a few type II's do have to use insulin, just not as frequently. Really depends on the source of the resistance

If it helps any....

My dad is Type II. He's taking OTC ALA to help. I've suggested he try r-ALA, but he's not done it yet.

So, I suppose it would be beneficial, I just don't know how much a Type II diabetic would use.

mac....thanks for clearing that up.

Baby Gorilla.....that's good to hear. She's actually type-1, my bad! I told her to talk to her doc about it and see what he says. She should be getting a glucose meter soon. I could tell her to get some and try it and just monitor her levels.

if you could keep track of and post her blood glucose results it would be greatly appreciated :)

I am a type 1 diabetic and have been taking ALA for a while for bodybuilding. I don't find that it lowers my blood sugar at all. - cbeaks

odd even Racemic ALA should lower BG. WHat brand? it may just be OLD or a bad manufacturer. (or both)
