Quick question on overhead presses

Are you supposed to tuck your elbows on those, too? I just realized I've always flared on those...lol. I'm working out now so I'll check back in a sec.

tucking your elbows will keep your shoulders in a safer position and allow you to utilize more tricep strength which is imperative for the lift and progression.

stay tight

i tuck to a certian position. i feel that i can generate much more power and speed when my elbows are between my wrist and my shoulders, when the bar is at the bottom position. my hands are always just past shoulder length, and i tuck my elbows in, which kinda puts all 3 into a straight line.

dont flare, its worse on your shoulder joint, than flaring on a bench press.

Thanks.. what width of grip do you use? I'm finding I have to go in some from my old grip. I used to do this exercise with pinkies on the rings, but now I've moved them in about an inch on each side.. it feels easier to keep my elbows in with that grip.

im 5'10 with a very long upper body and arms compared to my shorter legs. i stretch out my thumbs and lay them across the bar, and where they touch the smooth is where i grip. then i wrap my thumbs around the bar.

What is the difference between a overhead press and a push press? Are they both a shoulder lift? I know that the push press is a standing barbell shoulder press where you utilize your legs some to make the lift, but is a OHP the same without using your legs?

So is it like 16 inches between your index fingers?

im not in the gym right now but that seems about right. around a foot and a half.

when i bench press, that is what i call my medium grip for speed work. thats the same grip i use for clean and press, strict press, standing strict press, push press, push jerk. its all the same for me.

Yup.

My question then is why do them (OHP) standing at all? It seems that if your not going to use your legs and your trying not to cheat with your legs why not just sit down. I do my shoulder barbell presses sitting down to avoid the possibility of cheating with my legs.
