Quick question on flies

When I used to do them. I always liked incline and cable flies. Felt a real nice stretch and contraction, and seemed a good way to finish off a heavy chest workout. Lately my training has been more focused on power, so Ive stopped doing them, with the reasoning that it may stretch the muscle out and make it less dense. Less density seems to equal less strength to me. I have no resources to back that up though haha. Hope that helps

Why do people hate them?

They can hurt the shoulders over time, and they are a far less productive movement than a pressing exercise. It's like leg extensions vs. squats.

I agree. They are no substitute for presses.

No substitute indeed, but a good addition? Yes, possibly. Beast, you don't preform them now because you're focused on power. Does this mean you used them for additional size?

Yes. I used to do them all the time after my benching (incline and flat). I was more concerned with size back then, since I was so fucking skinny and my strength was way above my size. I never did one rep maxes back then, and reps were always moderate to high. Now that my chest measurement is atleast decent (48.5, most of which is back) Ive been focusing alot on one rep maxes and low reps with the heaviest weights I can handle unassisted.
Lots of forced reps also helped me alot in building my strength. Lately I just lift what I can unassisted since my goals have shifted slightly. I hardly have the energy or often time to add flies in since my bench workouts take a LONG time to complete. If I do something extra now its speed bench and rack lockouts. Seems flies were better for stretching out the chest and getting some additional blood in the muscle, which was good when I trained for pump and soreness only. I think they helped somewhat. They were excellent for me before I tried freeweight bench, but now dont do much for me. Last I tried them I was able to hit 180lbs per side for 8-10 reps. Still no comparison to freeweight presses IMO.
I havent done them steadily in over 2 years and still have all the striations in my chest. Hope that helps

walking beast it's funny that your have at least double my strength but my chest/lat width is better than yours

I have always had a big sticky out chest ....before i ever weight trained it stuck out like i was puffing it out on purpose..my shoulders are very broad. i have stickman arms :) they are seriously small ...people have always thought of me as a big strong guy all my life..but im actually weak and keep my unresponsive arms covered

Thats awesome man. Wish I started out with that problem. 15.5 isnt small at all. Just your chest is quite large for 2 years lifting. How big were your arms when you started? It took me about 4 years to reach 15.5. Of course my arms were between 10-12 inches back then. Nothing but bone to build on. haha. Keep at it man!

No no things have been terrible recently ..I had a thread where i complained that nothing was working. My strength is pretty poor. My arms havent grown in nearly a year..they were 14 and a bit inches when i measured them at the start. i know an inch and a bit gain is ok but it all happened at the start and never continued.

My body is like pure meso for chest/lats/shoulders....endo for stomach and hips/quads and ecto for arms and calves :D :D

but like you say bro..we gotta keep at it

Dont let it get to you too much. Your overall net gains are nice for 2 years training. Plateaus are just an unfortunate but usually temporary set back. Im sure your gains will start coming again. Just eat as much as you can and lift hard and heavy. Ive been frustrated myself lately. My strength has been coming along nice, but size has been moving real slow lately. It all adds up eventually though. Stay strong
