Quick Lat n Shoulder Help

shadowbox

New member
So..last Back day I did my pulldowns then rows and tried out some pull-ups (assisted) - On these boards I see alot of people seem to be ditching the lat pulls anyone wanna try to sway me to be the next one to go? Also can someone give me a lil info/help about pull and chin ups? I need to get used to them on the assist machine until im strong enough to do BW (190)

Now - about shoulders - I just have a question about doing shrugs..whats the best way to do them? My gym has a few machines but Im not really a fan of them..so barbell or dumbells?

Not sure what sort of info you want about chins. Just jump on the assist machine and go with a wide-grip and work your way up until you can do them without the machine help.

For shrugs, I'd say it's more preference than anything. I see a lot of guys using a bar, some use DB's, and some do both. It's all up to what you feel works for you.

guess so..i think i prefer doing it with dumbells..also ill get more specific about the chin/pull ups

The assist machine at my gym has a view different grip options I just wanted to know - what exactly is the difference between chin ups and pull ups..Im actually getting back from the gym and I did work out my back so heres what I did - put on about 90lbs for my reps -

Wide grip palms facing away from me - did 3 sets altogether total about 20 reps
Now I dont know if these are chin ups - but my assist machine has the horizontal bar and then theres two parallel grips so when you grab em your palms face each other and forearms are parallel..are those chin ups or are chin ups just pull ups but with your palms facing you?

Chin-ups have the palms facing you, pull-ups away (or that's conventional wisdom around here). I'd start with chin-ups, they seem to be a little easier. Do them in place of your pull-downs next time and see how many you can do. Try taking all the rests you want until you can finish your set. (I'd recommend not going down all the way to where your elbows are totally straight.) Keep doing them every week and you'll see improvement, and you'll be knocking them out like a pro before too long, then you can start adding some weight.

Dumbell shrugs are more natural movement, but I don't have dumbells that heavy so I use a barbell. It works probably just as well, imo.

Good luck.

I find pull-ups really hard, with my own body weight I can only manage 2-3 at the most but I am aiming to build up to be able to do 20 with my body weight.
As for shrugs, I use the smith machine, although I see people using dumbbells, plates and barbells, just depends what you like (I first tried shrugs with dumbbells but didn't like it, I prefer the smith machine)
