Posting this for a co-worker that I'm concerned with.

Female, early 30's, history of drug/alcohol addiction, clean for several years (not sure exactly how long), currently has really bad depression and binging/purging habits. Obsession with food and gaining fat. She's not fat at all but I always see her with fashion magazines on her desk and getting discouraged I imagine.

I know it's best to mind my own business but I don't want this to get out of hand more than it already has.

I was thinking about telling her to talk to her doctor about maybe an antidepressant or something like ativan or xanax but was concerned that maybe this wasn't such a good idea considering that she has a past history of substance abuse. Is there something that would be better in this case? Thanks in advance.

Well your friend def seems to need a diagnosis of depression first. If she is diagnosed then an SSRI might be a good choice unless contraindicated. SSRIs are excellent choices especially when combined with CBT (cognitive behav therapy). She should def seek a health care professionals advice first.
