Question for the computer gurus

A'ight, it's like this.

Thanks to a rather nasty electrical storm we had about 2 weeks ago which fried my old `puter through the cable ethernet line, I'm now on a new `puter. My old OS was Windows98 (please hold your laughter to a minimum), and I'm now using Windows XP home edition.

Here's the issue(s):

When first opening Windows, I have a 50/50% shot (at best) as to whether or not my homepage will even load. I've tried several sites for my homepage with the same results. When it fails to load, it says "cannot find server". Sometimes I'll click refresh and it'll load, other times it won't.

Strange thing is, I can go from the error page straight to wherever I want (say, EF for example) and that loads up just fine.

I have the same issue(s) when I click on a link in a thread...sometimes the page will load, othertimes it won't. When it fails to load, hitting refresh doesn't usually work, I have to close the page out and try it again later.

It's not really a huge problem, but it is annoying.

I know someone's bound to suggest going to Mozilla or some other browser, but I'd really like to just solve this (hopefully) simple problem and stay with what I've got.

Ideas?

maybe your modem is messed up.....or what ever that box that they give you is called...when ever i unplug my comp or lose power i go through the same probs...i generally call my internet company and have them re do my modem and then it works like normal again.

I already replaced my modem. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my new computer to communicate with the modem via ethernet cable, only via USB. Thinking the storm had zapped the modem, it was replaced only to find it still won't communicate via ethernet, only USB.

This is a whole new `puter. The old one was about 6 years old, obsolete and not worth fixing.

Everything else works fine, just this intermittent connection problem.

oh ooops didnt read the 1st paragragh...ok no laughs just got new comp with xp a few months ago i was ghetto too with the win 98......go to control panel then go to the internet and network connections or what ever then go to internet options see what it says for your home page some times if you log in by using the e for internet explorer the internet option thing doesnt say the same thing...after that then you are screwed maybe who you are using is busy or what not i havent the slightest...i tried....

if it makes u feel better
i was using a windows 95 till last year:(

To me it sounds like a nameserver problem. Go to the website for your cable company and find out what the ip addresses are for your isp's primary and secondary nameservers. They should have help sections at the ISP website for fixing nameserver problems.

Will check that tomorrow, thanx. :)

i know nothing about puters, but is it possible the strike somehow messed up the cable line?

Dunno, but I don't think so since my `puter is split from my cable TV line, and that still works fine.

Shit like this makes me miss the old days of using smoke signals.
