question for computer experts

my brothers computer is messed up. he came home from work, and turned it on, and the dell splash screen came up, then it went to a black screen that had some words and stuff and after trying to load for awhile, it said there was no operating sysem loaded. i then tried to re-load windows xp, and when i tried to do this, it wouldn't work cause it said that the computer did not have a hard drive. does anybody have any idea what i can do to fix this? he has a dell laptop with windows xp. thanks for any help

does a hard drive failure mean that the computer is shot, or can he just buy a new hard drive and everything will work fine?

Buy a new HD, replace, then reload using the recovery disk. All should be good.
