question about annorexia and bulemics

i was just wondering if any of you have heard about bulemics having a hard time with dieting results after having the problem for 2 and a half years. i had been bulemic for about 2 and a half yrs. i have had no problems at all for the last year but at the same time my training and diet regimen are very strict and good. i train with my boyfriend three days a week and do cardio about 4-5 days a week in the mornings before i eat. before i had my problem with bulemicy this was a great routine but now i just continue to gain fat. not a lot but obvious amounts on my inner thighs and butt. do you think that this could be due to my problems in the past. maybe my body is not producing something that it use to? i just don't understand, please help. thank you all.

Hi Slasher,

Could you give us more information? A typical day's diet (what you eat and how many meals a day) and a typical workout? When you train, is it high reps/low weights or what? Your cardio, is it always long slow "fat-burning" cardio, or do you ever do high intensity intervals? Also, what is your age and any medications you're taking.

I'm a 20 year veteran of eating disorders. Yes, the body does go through an adjustment period, but no, that does not mean you can't reclaim your metabolism and get lean and strong.

From your post I cannot tell if you are still engaging in bulimic behavior or not. If you are then there are psysiological responses that occur every time you do this that will prevent you from becoming lean. The end game for a bulimic is to be skinnny/fat - there is no way around it. If you are recovering your body has a huge adjustment to make, it has been fighting starvation for so long that it will cling to every calorie that you put in. When I stopped the behaviour some 15 years ago I got fat but there has to be a way to restructure a metabolism without excessive fat gain.

MS or W6 is there a way to restructure a metabolism that has been slowed in this manner without gaining a good deal of fat?

I have noticed one thing with many of our ED members-
They eat WAY TOO MANY starchy, high glycemic index carbs! And not enough protein.
You might do a search for "GI" or "glycemic index" on the diet board. :)

hi, and thank you .
first of all my cardio is not all that intense. i usually do about 45-60min of joging or eliptical. my diet is usually as follows
meal1-about a cup of cottage cheese, half cup oatmeal, little bit of pineapple
meal2-usually a meal replacement
meal3-some chicken usually in a salad
meal4-more damn chicken
my boyfriend is really supportive and we cook or marinate wuite a bit of chicken early in the week so that way we have it ready when needed. he is very into the sport and has been for years. hes 24 and i am 23. somebnody posted that they could not tell if i still sufered from bulimicy, no i do not not for about a year now.
i am not gaining fat per say but for the amount of training and cardio and dieting that i am doing i should be alot harder. me and my boyfriend have been in the health industry long enough to know that what i am doing should be enough so this is why the question sprung that maybe my body is not producing some crucial enzymes or maybe mt thyroid is screwed up. i really don't know. i do not consume any high glycemic carbs besides the fruit that i eat and it isn't a lot.
any input will help yall, thanks

Any chance you're on any type of hormonal birth control? Pill, Depo? That can be a big road block to fat loss (it was for me).

What type of training routine? Hard and heavy or low weight/high rep? If you have history of eating disorder, you've probably lost some muscle mass (which has lowered your metabolism). Do not be afraid to train hard and heavy. Adding some muscle will help burn fat. You will not get bulky (unless you use steriods-and maybe not even then). Remember, muscle is denser than fat. If you trade 5 pounds of fat for 5 pounds of muscle, you'll actually get SMALLER.

For the cardio, I got really good results swapping out a couple of my long cardio sessions for some short intense (20 min) interval training sessions. Interval sprints really helped put definition in my legs.

yes i am on birth control, ortho tricycline. don't know what you mean by DEPO. please explain.
does bulimicy mess with your thyroid at all. and if so would it take a year to get it back to regulation.

By "Depo", I meant Depo-Provera, a birth control shot you get a few times a year. Everyone I've ever heard about who's taken it says it's like "fat in a syringe". Ortho-Tricyclin is a "low dose" pill, so it should have less side effects. I tried that one, but it gave me plenty of side effects, and I had to switch to non-hormonal BC.

Not sure if bulimacy messes w/ your thyroid. Maybe should get a thyroid test from your doc to be sure.

It is becoming clear in recovering eating disordered women that the the fat regain is centralized. The mechanism is not clear, but estrogen doesn't change it. Could have to do with cortisol.

Wouldn't surprise me if some of the metabolic changes were relatively permanent, but they can be changed with proper exercise, hormone therapy if necessary and the right dietary intake.

The message here should be clear. If you don't want the long-term metabolic problems and eventual excess fat regain, don't get into an eating disorder to begin with.

Funny how so many get into eating disorders to get lean and end up fat in the long run. Something to ponder before embarking on that course of action.

As a "recovered" anorexic (I still have a dismorphic mind set), I can say that I have trouble with loosing weight the healthy way. My calories are about 1200/ day and I do high impact cardio for an hour 3x/week and low impact the other days. I also weight lift 5x/ wk. All this and not loosing an ounce. Of course, you have to realize the right way to loose weight is a slow process, compared to the fast ED way.

I agree with whoever stated that you must get more protein. With my ED my 500 calorie diet was mostly carbs.

My advice is to get off the birth controll. Estrogen is evil to making physique changes. Find another method. LOL - and congrats on getting over the ED, I know how hard it is. It's an addiction, many people fail to realize that.

W6 I think they are permanent and although diet and training can help I don't think it is ever the way it was before the ED. I am 15 years recovered and losing fat is a never ending battle for me and the amount of lean mass that I have doesn't seem to have a big impact on how easy it is for me to lose it. When you mention hormone therapy and right dietary intake what are you talking about specifically, are the dietary requirements different in this situation?

I think you need to eat more food....Your morning meal needs some PROTEIN!! Dont be afraid to eat protein! It will only help you...I would try to eat 6 meals a day...Keep water intake up...Are you lifting heavy? Dont focus so much on cardio...the weight training is where you will build the lean tissue and this will boost your metabolism...Do not skip meals....it will only slow the metabolism down...I am not an expert on what can happen to your metabolism after a ED...I did the starving thing when I did runway several years ago...now i eat like a horse..if I eat clean..I stay fairly lean...I do little to no cardio unless getting ready for a show...I eat 6-8 oz of meat w/ each meal...also do a carb rotation...hope this helps a little:)

Temp- I'm right there with ya...I dieted and trained along with a gril that was getting ready for a show, we trained together under the same trainer, I am shorter but also stronger. Her body was changing every week, I for one looked flatter and smoother and body weight did not change. But the week after I was done I looked GREAT! but that was only that week:( I'll never figure myself out!
